How To Grip Your Bowling Ball

If you wish to learn how to grip your bowling ball, then here are some tips to help develop a good technique. Your ability to know how to grip your bowling ball will help you regulate your release, control bowling ball speed, ball direction and maintain a consistent rev-rate, all of which will work in helping you improve your scores.

First, most coaches and pro shop operators who drill bowling balls recommend placing your bowling fingers into your ball before your bowling thumb. This technique is a proven one over many years and works toward gaining a consistent placement of your bowling hand into the bowling ball repeatedly.

Place your bowling fingers into your bowling ball gripping holes completely down to the second knuckle joint if you are using a conventional grip ball, then carefully place your thumb down into the thumb gripping hole all the way down so the inside pads of your thumb are fit into the hole in a straight manner with no bending at the knuckle joint. The palm of your hand should be almost completely resting on the ball surface after your fingers and thumb are properly placed into the gripping holes.

Try and avoid excessive gripping pressure in holding the ball. If the gripping holes of the ball fit properly, you will never have to squeeze the ball to hold and swing the ball but rather use modest gripping pressure to enhance consistent deliveries of the ball.

As a beginning bowler or newcomer to the game, you likely are using a conventional grip with either a house ball or one drilled for you. Conventional grips are easy to hold but do not offer the ability to impart maximum power during your release. Fingertip grips will give you the best chance at the most effective release. Once your coach or pro shop operator think you are ready to use a fingertip grip, then make the change.

To properly grip a fingertip drilled ball, place your bowling fingers down to the first knuckle joint with the pads of your fingers gripping the holes firmly enough to support the weight of the swinging bowling ball. Place your thumb into the gripping hole entirely down as far as the thumb will go and make sure the thumb does not bend at the joint by curling your knuckle inside the hole. There should be about twice as much gripping pressure applied by the fingers than the thumb once you have properly gripped the finger tip drilled bowling ball.

The palm of your hand should rest on the surface of the ball without too much space between the palm of your hand and the ball surface. Keep your "pinky" finger (your small finger) resting against the ring finger which is inside it's gripping hole. Allow your index finger to either rest against the middle gripping finger or spread out from the middle finger for increased gripping balance purposes.

It is important to own a properly fitting bowling ball. It is also very important to learn the fundamentals of making a good bowling approach so we at bowlingball.com recommend you take lessons from a certified bowling coach or from a local bowling professional to assist you on your path to improvement.
