Core Design: The core used in this new release is an all-new shape with asymmetric properties. The RG is higher than most high-performance Storm products, while the Diff remains strong at .055. The mass bias strength is .022. This core provides for smooth drilling with little to no drill-walk, which was common with the heavy, low density cores found in the Paradigm series. Testing found 6" of track flare with stronger layouts with weight holes. More conservative layouts (4.5" - 6" pin distances) displayed a 3-5" of flare.
Coverstock: This is the third release utilizing the R2s cover, Storm's strongest to date. The Shift's cover is blended with a 2% particle load and Storm's pearl additive. The tri-coloring's attractive blend is of scarlet, tiger's eye (gold_ and violet. The surface is finished at 1500-grit polish, which is very bowler friendly.
Manufacturer's Intent: The following is a quote from Storm's R&D director: "The Shift has a light particle load, just enough to help control over-skid when you keep the ball in the oil... So the Shift is unique in that it has a strong mass bias, fast spin time, and medium (2.55) RG."
Test Results: Many Bowlers tend to migrate toward balls which provide the shape or look they personally prefer. Total hook, length and breakpoint shape all contribute to this important look. our tests and my guy feeling is this ball will provide this look, re: easy length through the fronts and surefooted traction in the midlane with an aggressive arc to flip off friction. The shift can handle heavier volumes than the Domination, yet has a similarly strong move at the breakpoint. We found dulling the surface to 2000-abralon provided an earlier, more rounded shape, yet was still later and more angular than a Double Agent with the same surface. I'd classify the response time as quick, with factory finish.
When to Use: Bowlers will have greatest success on medium to heavier patterns on either wood or synthetics. Longer patterns were also brought to their knees with the Shift due to its quick response off dry and excellent traction through the front 40 ft. Lighter or broken-down patterns will require adequate ball speed or lower rev rates to match up properly. When simply needed to play the breakdown transition by playing well inside the oil line, just tickle the dry to experience the quick and angular move.
