A Firm Bowling Wrist With A Loose Swing

By: bowlingball.com, 8/2/16

Updated 11/13/2020

A simple but effective swing tip is to use a firm bowling wrist with a loose swing motion.

Set your wrist position on the approach in your stance position and work to maintain a firm wrist and hold that position throughout your entire swing cycle.

Keeping your wrist firm prevents excessive collapsing of your wrist before your hand reaches the release point at or very near the bottom of your forward swing.

If you are a bowler who tends to “figure eight” your wrist as you swing the ball, keeping a firm wrist will help minimize any excessive or unneeded wrist motion during your swing and will help trigger your thumb exiting the ball at the precise moment intended for an effective release.

Most bowlers, however, do not “figure eight” the wrist while swinging the ball.

It is surprising how many bowlers, instead, will actually collapse the wrist on the forward swing just prior to releasing the ball.

This collapsing motion of the wrist actually slows the thumb from quickly exiting the ball in relation to the fingers and causes a long skid distance.

For this reason, many bowlers use a wrist support device to help keep their wrist in a firm and locked in position avoiding the wrist collapsing sooner than intended.

The key in controlling the wrist is to make sure you swing the ball loosely and freely from your bowling shoulder.

Using a loose and free backswing will establish a consistent motion and regulate the tempo of your complete swing cycle which, in turn, helps you release the ball consistently each shot.

Also, maintain consistent gripping pressure with your fingers ball throughout your swing.

The combination of a loose swing motion and a firm wrist can help you develop good speed and loft distance control and a consistent rev rate.

Another key to releasing your ball consistently is to avoid grabbing the ball at the top of your backswing and forcing the first 12 to 18 inches of your downswing by trying to apply more power to your release. Allowing the ball to fall freely into the downswing by not grabbing the ball harder in the downswing than in your backswing helps you to use gravity to swing your ball instead of excessive, controlled muscle tension in your arm.
