Basic Bowling Footwork Techniques

If you are a beginner bowler or relatively new to the game and wish to learn a bit more than you know now about your steps and which techniques will work best, learn some time tested and proven footwork fundamentals and try to build them into your bowling.

Good footwork fundamentals are the cornerstone used in developing a sound bowling approach.

Here are a few recommended basic bowling footwork techniques to consider:

*Use your natural walking stride distance. Do not take shorter or longer steps than your normal walking stride.

*Maintain a slight amount of knee flex during the first three steps and add more flex in your final sliding step so the big muscles of your sliding leg are used for balance and leverage.

*Walk with a smooth motion to the foul line using a slight heel-to-toe action leading into the slide step.

*The slide step should glide into the approach with most of your weight balanced on the ball of your sliding foot initially and then your weight becomes more evenly distributed on your sliding heel and sole of your bowling shoe.

*Establish a consistent walking tempo each shot you make.

*Limit the amount of drift, either to the left or to the right, to about two boards from the initial set-up alignment. If possible, train your steps to arrive precisely on the board where you intend to slide for maximum accuracy.

*Begin your first step with an unhurried movement to trigger a consistent start each time you take an approach to the line.

Good bowling balance is vital in developing good technique with your steps. Balance while you walk is a big factor in becoming an accurate bowler. A very good strategy is to keep your head and shoulders as motionless as possible while walking to the foul line. Hold your form at the foul line while watching your bowling ball pass through your sight target on the lane.
