Core Design:Visionary's duel density symmetric core boast a high RG of 2.59 and a low Diff of .029. This allows for the later revving and reduced flaring core, suited for length and control for most average rev-rate players.
Coverstock:If you like orange, you'll love the Ogre. The solid eradicator reactive cover is finished at 600-grit and color mixed with about 90% bright orange and 10% black swirl.
Manufacturer's Intent:Jason Wonders, President of Visionary, had this to say: "The Ogre Solid utilizes our newly designed Eradicator coverstock; a strong solid reactive shell that cuts through oil, and handles carrydown extremely well. While the coverstock is designed for medium to heavier house shots, it is very user-friendly and can be easily adjusted to cover a wide range of oil patterns. The Ogre is powered by a symmetrical, dual density core design without a wrap. This allows for a thicker, more uniform coverstock for extra resilience and energy at impact with the the pins. The dense flip cap helps crease a strong move at its breakpoint, while the body of the core helps to provide a consistent reaction without the typical over/under you see from many reactives. Also, this core allows for minor mistakes, without suffering the consequences."
Test Results:What stood out the most about the Ogre was its unique rolling characteristic and motion through the pins. The core revs rather easily despite its medium rating, yet picks up strongly near the late midlane (35-40') The core also rolls more end-over-end as opposed to a sideways motion. This type of roll was prevalent regardless of hand position. The results we found were pleasingly easy-to-read arcing ball with above-average length, considering its dull 600-grit finish. Smoothing the surface enhanced its response off dry boards, with similar length. Polishing the surface with 1500 and higher gloss added a few feet of length and created a slight skid/snap reaction. We enjoyed this finish only on lighter patterns or shorter distances of 37' or less. On the medium to heavier volumes, the higher gloss created some squirt and a late (too late) response off the dry.
When to Use:When looking for easy length with a smooth arc to the pocket, use with factory finish on fresh patterns of medium volume. The response time off friction was moderate at 600-grit and slightly stronger with 2000- and 4000-abralon sanding. Overall, this mid-priced entry delivers a predictable heavy-rolling ball best suited for medium or lighter volumes, depending on surface treatment. Players preferring to play near the track area (8th to 12th board) should enjoy its power and predictability.
