Top Seed Prather Among Those Advancing to Round of 16 in 14th Teen Masters

Top seed Kristopher Prather of Milton, Fla., went 4-0 in his best-of-seven- game match Tuesday to join 15 others who advanced to the Round of 16 of the boys high school division in the 14th annual Teen Masters at the National Bowling Stadium.
Prather, who led through three rounds of qualifying, defeated No. 32 seed Christopher Fort of Peachtree City, Ga., 213-155, 183-158, 217-174 and 201-190.
Prather, who will be entering his freshman year at Wichita State University this fall, is competing in his fourth Teen Masters with a previous best finish of 11th in 2009.
Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tenn., also bowling in the high school division and who earlier this summer cashed in a PBA regional tournament to become the youngest bowler to accomplish the feat at age 12, also advanced winning his match 4-3 after being down 3-1 at one point.
“I knew I had to bowl amazing and I had to give it my all and give it the best I could,” Doyle said. “He (Joshua) didn’t miss much so I had to bowl the best I could.
“If I’m going to keep going, I’m going to have to make better shots tomorrow, make my spares and not split as much as I did today. I was pulling it a lot which was causing me to leave splits. I can’t do that tomorrow.”
In the Girls High School division, Thea Aspiras of Chesapeake, Va., held on to her qualifying lead after 18 games and will be the top seeded player in her division when the seven-game, single-elimination match play competition gets underway Wednesday. She averaged 205 during qualifying to finish with a 3,696 pinfall total, 276 pins ahead of second-place Caitlin Hofmann of Lockport, Ill.
“I did alright today,” the incoming Norfolk State University freshman said. “I definitely could have done better. I was hitting the pocket all day but I wasn’t carrying. I’m happy and satisfied with how I’ve bowled so far and I’m looking forward to match play. Match play is mind-boggling for opponents, but it’s fun. Match play brings the best out of me.”
Greg Young, Viera, Fla., topped the Boys 14-Under Division with 3,606 qualifying pins. Jeffrey Juarez of East Meadow, N.Y., was second with 3,435 pins. Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif., led the Girls 14-Under group with a 3,222 total, 110 pins ahead of Chevelle Holstein of Sparks, Nev.
The 16 surviving boys and top 16 girls in the High School division along with the eight boys and four girls in the 14-Under division will bowl head-to-head single-elimination match play competition Wednesday. High School players, who bowl seven-game matches, and the 14-Under division, which involves five-game matches, will bowl their final rounds on Thursday.
In addition to competing for scholarship prizes, two top players from the Teen Masters will join two players selected from the Collegiate Masters in earning invitations to bowl alongside the best bowlers in the world in the 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling, Oct. 24-Nov. 6, at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
