The Rest of the Story by Jim Goodwin

bowlingball.com 10/8/2015

To borrow a line from the famous Paul Harvey... there is more to the Glenn Allison story than the account of the latest chapter provided by the good people at La Habra 300 Bowl.

On January 10th of this year, Glenn Allison hand wrote a personal letter to me in thanks for the BNN article I had written about USBC's decision not to honor his remarkable achievement... again.

The point of my column was to imply that USBC officials knew before they ever opened the can of worms what the conclu- sion would be, and that being the case, why waste everyone's time and get hopes up only to maintain the status quo.

I said in my column that it is OK that USBC has chosen not to officially recognize Glenn's 900 because at the end of the day and forever 'The people know you did it.' My friend Glenn appreciated the support, and although he does not do email, he took the time and effort to write me a letter saying thanks.

In the letter, he said, "It will always sadden me that the USBC will never sanction my series; however, as you put it, the people know you did it. Most people do not know that the bowlers of So. Cal. collected money to have a ring made for me. The inscription on the inside was 300-300-300-900... People Sanctioned."

And then came the sad part of the letter - Glenn said "As my luck has been, I lost that ring which was my most valued possession."

Now - finally, the great Glenn Allison has a ring to replace the one he lost years ago but was too humble to tell anyone until recently.

I hope this new ring is insured, and not just as a piece of jewelry; as a piece of bowling history.

And silly me, I also hope that someday somebody at the USBC will come to their senses and provide some kind of official recognition for one of bowling greatest achievements performed by their own Hall of Famer and one of the greatest ambassadors and sportsmen in the history of bowling.
