Spine Angle And Bowling Knee Flex

If you wish to improve your balance at the foul line, think about your spine angle and bowling knee flex.

If you are to double check you are in a well balanced position to bowl, do so by starting with a well balanced posture (a.k.a. body position) in your stance.

Balance is key to repeating quality shots in competition.

Preset your spine angle by leaning your upper body forward about 10 or 15 degrees of tilt. Flex your knees downward slightly so your knee caps are in front of the shins of your legs ever so slightly before taking your first step.

Following your first step, add about an additional ¼ inch of knee flex with each succeeding step so your sliding knees are well flexed during your slide and more than your knees are flexed at stance.

Do this increasing knee flex with succeeding steps by also retaining the same spine angle (about 10 to 15 degrees forward tilt) throughout your approach and sliding step.

Now your upper body will be locked in as your steps increase slightly in pace and with increasing knee flex.

It is important to begin your approach smoothly and consistently each shot and avoiding a sudden weight transfer from one leg to the other as a key to a smooth transition from step to step.

If you want good balance while you slide and release your ball so your accuracy is maximized, then it is very important to retain your pre-set spine angle while you walk, swing and release your bowling ball and use your knees to bring your big muscles of your legs into use.

Walk smoothly without bouncing and keep your head as still as you can while focusing on your sight target.

Your knee flex and spine angle can then work in unison to help you build a solid platform by which you can create maximum power and leverage while making accurate shots.

It makes plain sense that if your swing can work off of a stable platform while you walk to the foul line, then you can repeat quality swings and releases.

Another key factor in retaining good bowling balance is your approach tempo. If your steps match the tempo your swing moves, your timing will remain consistent and your bowling movements will be reliable. Good tempo with your steps and swing help you develop consistent ball skid distance leading to a reliable ball reaction. Good approach tempo also helps you govern your ball speed and loft distance to further enhance your ball reaction.
