Control Your Bowling Ball Reaction

If you wish to control your bowling ball reaction, it is important to both control your ball skid distance as well as having a reliable back-end reaction.

In doing so, you can make initial alignment decisions quickly and, of course, alignment adjustment decisions.

It is important to know not all the problems with an inconsistent ball reaction stems from human error.

Choosing the right ball to use on a given lane condition with a compatible drilling layout and surface texture are also vital in getting a good ball reaction.

Bowling ball skid length control is the first concern you must address.

If your ball skid distance is not consistent, then your ball reacts unpredictably in the mid-lane. If you make good shots and know you are playing the oil pattern effectively but are not getting a consistent ball reaction, an adjustment of some sort is definitely needed.

If you prefer changing bowling balls as your first line of defense when getting a poor ball reaction, then make sure your equipment surfaces are prepared for use.

Choosing a ball with just the right amount of track flare so you do not see your ball hook too weakly or too sharply at the breakpoint is key to a reliable ball reaction.

Track flare correlates with the amount of back end hook motion your ball achieves once it leaves the initial front end skid phase.

Most bowling ball drillers recommend a control type drilling where your ball neither makes a very sharp hook motion at unpredictable distances down the lane nor hooks early and then loses energy on the back end of the lane.

Remember to have your equipment prepared to best match to a given lane condition.

If, however and as example, you prefer making lateral alignment adjustments on the approach and at your sight target on the lane, then be definitive in how much you adjust and in which direction you move your feet and target on the lane.

Indecision means you likely will be over cautious in making an adjustment and how much to adjust which, in turn, wastes time and precious frames before you restore a good ball reaction and find the pocket consistently once again.

Matching the skid distance and back end hook motion is the challenge any competitive bowler faces.

The name of the game is hitting the pocket repeatedly. Control your bowling ball reaction and improve your scores.

Other factors involved in controlling your ball reaction are ball speed control loft distance control, your release technique which directly affects your bowling ball axis of rotation and tilt. If you are not recently well practiced at adjusting any of these additional factors in controlling your ball reaction, it is advised to work on these techniques next time to get to the practice lanes. As many adjustments you trust and rely on during competition adds to your ability to restore a reliable ball reaction when needed most.
