There are many factors which help you develop a good approach. One which stands out as key in repeating a good approach to the foul line is bowling approach tempo.
Approach tempo refers to the pace of movement you make while taking your approach and delivering your bowling ball.
The notion of timing in bowling refers to the relationship of your pace of footwork and your arm swing motion.
By establishing a tempo which is closely matched to your natural walking pace and stride and then coordinating your swing cycle to your pace of movement develops your specific bowling tempo and timing sequence.
Use your natural length walking stride with a pace of steps which consistently builds momentum with each successive step.
Each step should be fairly uniform in length to prevent loss of balance while walking and swinging your bowling ball. As you gain momentum with each step your swing speed will accelerate and provide good bowling ball speed.
Coordinating your walking tempo with your arm swing tempo is vital for good timing. You must first establish a consistent swing tempo to accompany your overall tempo of movement during your approach.
A consistent swing tempo begins with a loose and free backswing.
Use a consistent gripping pressure on your bowling ball throughout the swing cycle to avoid forcing your swing and release. This cannot be stressed enough if you wish to regain a consistent swing tempo.
Develop a consistent ball speed so your ball reaction is also reliable. Do so by using a steady swing tempo each shot.
Trust your normal walking tempo and allow your swing to repeat in a free and loose motion with little muscle tension.
Other factors in maintaining good tempo are using an athletic posture throughout your approach. Good posture leads to good balance while you walk and swing your bowling ball. Balance leads to consistent shotmaking. Tempo, posture, balance and a relaxed bowling motion are all important keys in making a good approach with good tempo.
