The Roto Grip All Out Show Off with this layout for me is one of my best balls for medium to dry lanes. The polished hybrid coverstock on this ball has dynamically changed it from the original Show Off even though it has the same “Hotshot” core.
I used this ball and this layout when I encounter dry lanes. The polished hybrid coverstock allows the ball to travel effortlessly through the front part of the lane without over skidding past the breakpoint. It delivers great hitting power and a consistent reaction even when the lanes are dry. I use this ball after the lanes burnout and it performs great from many different entry angles. I really liked the original Show Off so I was really looking forward to using this ball when the Show Off becomes too strong. My normal house pattern is 40 feet with medium volume on high friction synthetics. The All Out Show Off is capable of handling very dry lanes but still hits very well and can knock out the corners. I believe this is a must have in the bag when the lanes burn out.

The Roto Grip Dare Devil Danger with this layout for me is one of my strongest balls. The hybrid coverstock on this ball has dynamically changed it from the original Dare Devil and the Dare Devil Trick even though it has the same “Psyched” core.
I used this ball on 3 different pattern types. Two league condition patterns around 42 feet, and a longer more even tournament pattern. The ball is definitely clean through the front, but revs up in the midlane and makes a very strong, angular entry into the pocket with a loud cracking sound when it hits the pins! The pin action is unbelievable. I believe this ball is very versatile and will work for many different styles of bowlers.
I also tried modifying the original 1500 grit with polish surface to 2000 abralon applied by hand with no polish. The result was very good. It evened out the backend reaction but it did not sacrifice any of its hook potential or hitting power. The 2000 abralon made the break point more readable and more even. Even though I applied more surface, the ball did not have a hard time traveling clean down the lane.
I believe this is going to be one of the best selling balls this year and is a great value for the price.

Never thought I would brag about a urethane ball ever again but I was wrong. This ball is AMAZING! It has the hitting power of a reactive ball with the smooth, predictable reaction of a urethane ball but with a lot more hook then ever before. I drilled my Hot Cell wit the pin up, 5 inches from my PAP. It works extremely well on sport style shots and on wet/dry house shots meaning you generally have a lot of oil in the middle and a lot of dry on the outside with a distinct line between the oil and dry. It tames down the over reaction you may encounter with a reactive ball, but still has enough motion to allow you to move inside and knock out the corners when the lanes start to transition. It comes sanded out of the box an works well at that finish. If you are looking for strong, consistent reaction with strong pin carry, this is definitely the ball for you.

Roto Grip Hybrid Hustle
Layout 5.5 x 5.5 x 2.5
Ball Speed: 17.5 mph
Pattern: 44 house
Surface: 2000 Abralon by hand
First Impressions: I have now got approximately 24 games on the Roto Grip Hustle Hybrid with the above layout. All I have to say is wow!!! This may be the one of the best values on the market for a mid range priced ball that works extremely well on medium oil.
Pros: Ball is clean through the heads (front) even at a sanded 2000 abralon surface. The ball shows readable midlane motion even with my high ball speed. It does not skid too far down the lane. Even though the ball starts to rev up in the midlane, it retains a lot of motion on the backend. I was standing on 24 and playing the 12 board at the beginning of league. After transition, I ended up standing on 28 and playing around 17 board at the arrows. The ball would make its way out to around the 8 board then migrate strongly toward the pocket. The ball hits very well and had no problem getting the corners out. Even though the ball is strong, it showed me a very predictable and readable reaction.
Cons: For me with a higher ball speed, after I moved deeper (past 30), I had a little harder time knocking the corners out. The surface and ball layout also contribute to this. The strength of this ball for me is not swinging the entire lane. When I moved really deep, I needed to make a ball change to retain my pin carry.
Closing: It is plenty strong on medium oil with the 2000 abralon surface and hits well. If the lanes break down or are very dry, I then need to go to a pearlized ball because the Hustle Hybrid starts to move a little too early for me from very deep inside. Overall, a great performing ball at an unbelievable price.

Just drilled a Hustle Ink in a 5 x 5 x 2 layout. My PAP is 5.25 and up ¼. I am very impressed with this ball especially at this price. It delivers a lot of motion on the backend with great hitting power. With this particular layout, I have no problem clearing the front part of the lane and this is a great ball for a standard house shot. The ball transitions smooth and rolls hard toward the pocket. Seems to be very effective on wet dry and works well both up the boards and when you swing it. The only weakness I have seen when I have used it is on heavy oil. This is definitely a medium to dry lane ball for me.
Great ball for the money!

Roto Grip Hyper Cell Fused
Layout 4.5 x 4.5 x 3.5
Ball Speed: 17.5 mph
Pattern: 44 house
Surface: 1500 abralon/polished (box surface)
First Impressions: I was excited to get this ball and now I know why! This ball did not disappoint.
Pros: Ball is very clean through the heads (front). The ball shows readable midlane motion even with my high ball speed. It does not skid too far down the lane. Even though the ball starts to rev up in the midlane, it DOES NOT BURN UP and retains a lot of motion on the backend and is to be considered “hard off the spot.” For a player like me with a higher ball speed, sometimes I run into a problem when I move way inside. This is NOT the case with this ball. I am able to adjust and move and the ball just seems to perform better and better. When I moved really deep, the ball still rounded the corner aggressively enough to knock out the corners. I am able to use this ball all through league and through transitions.
Cons: On a condition where the backends are spotty or suffer a lot of carry down, you might need a surface adjustment. The shiny cover can make carry down more apparent, however this would depend on your ball speed and where you are playing the lane.
Closing: It is plenty strong on medium to heavy oil with the box surface. The ball likes clean backends and absolutely hits like a tank. It is a great benchmark, shiny ball and can read the lanes very well without sacrificing backend reaction.

Roto Grip Idol
Layout: 5.5 x 4 x 2.5
Ball Speed: 17.5 mph
Lane Conditions: Tested on 44 foot house pattern, 40 foot US Open Pattern
Box Surface: 2000 grit Abralon

The Roto Grip Idol is a great ball at an amazing price point! This ball is a solid ball that is still “hard off the spot” meaning that it rolls up in the midlane but still makes an aggressive move toward the pocket.
I tested the layout on a regular 44 foot house pattern with the box surface. The ball read the mid lane well and still had enough turn on the backend to knock out the corner pins. The hitting power was strong and consistent and it noticeably carried a lot of light hits on the pocket.
I also tested it on the old 40 foot US Open pattern. This pattern is pretty flat. Most of the time, In use a little more aggressive surface to help smooth out the transition of the ball when it exits the oil and hits the dry. When I threw the Roto Grip Idol, it easily cleared the front part of the lane, made a predictable and solid read in the mid part of the lane and did NOT overreact on the backend. I did not have to change the surface to get the roll and read I wanted and it seems to go good with my higher ball speed.
I would definitely recommend this ball for both league and competitive bowlers. It is a must have in your arsenal.

This is the best heavy oil ball on the market currently if you are looking for something that reads the midlane and does not lose its backend reaction. In the past, I have encountered a lot of so called heavy oil balls that just lose their motion on the back end. This is NOT the case with the No Rules Exist. This ball rolls up strong and continues all the way through the pins. I have mine drilled pin up, 4.5" from my PAP with the PSA also around 4.5" from my PAP. This ball works well for me on sport patterns like Bear on synthetic lanes. It also works well on a house pattern with a lot of oil in the front part of the lane. Compared to its predecessor, the original No Rules, it has a lot more finish to it with a lot more hitting power. 5 stars to this ball on oil!

One of the best releases for late 2017. Unbelievable performance at a GREAT price point. Ball delivers clean motion through the front with strong movement on the back end even with the (sanded) box finish. Great ball, great value.

I drilled 2 of these so far. One is drilled with a 5.5" pin from PAP up high and the other is 4.5 inch from pap pin down (just under the ring finger area). First, both layouts deliver a very strong motion at the break point. There is a considerable difference between the pin up and the pin down. The pin up delivers great length but still reads the midlane while maintaining a strong back end reaction and works well when I am deep inside. The pin down version is still clean through the heads, has a stronger read at the midlane then the pin up version, but still delivers a lot of backend. I use the pin down version when I encounter more volume in the heads. I find this ball to be 4-6 boards stronger then the code black with a lot more motion at the turn on both sport and house patterns. This is a great all around ball for both the moderate and advanced bowler. It is a must have in the Storm line of balls.

Storm Code X
Layout: 6 x 5 x 3.5
Ball Speed: 17.5 mph
Lane Conditions: Tested on 44 foot house pattern, 40 foot US Open Pattern
Box Surface: 3000 grit Abralon

The Storm Code X is the first ball out of my bag on medium to heavy oil. This ball features an asymmetrical RAD4 core with a R2S solid coverstock. Do not let the coverstock fool you! This ball still delivers great length and amazing backend!! I did not change the surface at all, and am maintaining the original 3000 Abralon surface. I feel the ball is versatile and hits extremely well.
Sometimes I run into problems where when more surface is applied, I now have to force the ball through the front or change angles. When I threw the Storm Code X, it easily cleared the front part of the lane, made a predictable and solid read in the mid part of the lane and did NOT overreact on the backend. I did not have to change the surface to get the roll and read I wanted and again, it seems to throw pins everywhere and carry light hits.
I would definitely recommend this ball for both league and competitive bowlers. It is a must have in your arsenal.

Storm Drive
Layout: 4 x 4 x2.5
Ball Speed: 17.5 mph
Lane Conditions: Tested on 44 foot house pattern, 40 foot US Open Pattern
Box Surface: 3000 Grit Abralon

The Storm Drive was a ball release that I was anticipating for a long time. I was a huge fan of the Timeless with its “dual drive” weight block technology and this is where this ball gets its lineage. The Drive has a little bit stronger coverstock than the Timeless which gives it an earlier read of the midlane without sacrificing the backend reaction.
I tested the 4 x 4 x 2.5 layout on a regular 44 foot house pattern with the box surface which is 3000 grit Abralon. The ball read the mid lane well and still had enough turn on the backend to knock out the corner pins. It will definitely be the first ball out of the bag on heavier oil conditions. The hitting power was strong and consistent and it noticeably carried a lot of high hits in the pocket. The ball became too strong after house transition and when I moved inside and I needed to change to a pearl surface.
I also tested it on the old 40 foot US Open pattern. This pattern is pretty flat. Most of the time, In use a little more aggressive surface to help smooth out the transition of the ball when it exits the oil and hits the dry. The ball cleared the front easily enough and delivered the strong and steady reaction through the midlane and one the backend which is oftentimes so important when dealing with sport style conditions.
I would definitely recommend this ball for both league and competitive bowlers. It is a must have in your arsenal for heavy oil conditions.

The Storm Hyroad Nano with this layout for me is one of the most versatile balls I have for medium to heavy oil patterns. Now that I have more games on it, the Hyroad Nano at box grit is definitely a go to ball when the conditions are right. The Hyroad Nano is a very strong ball but also very clean through the front. With the layout I chose, it gives me perfect length without skidding too far down the lane. It reads the mid lane and then makes a very strong but controllable movement toward the pocket. When thrown from deep inside even with the box grit it still can recover and knock out the corners. I also tried an alternate surface and used 4000 abralon to see if I could create more length on less oil conditions. The result was definitely a positive one whereas I was now able to use the ball when the heads got a little burned up.
Overall, this ball delivers a lot of high performance at a medium price point and reacts well to surface changes. It has the same amazing Hyroad hitting power with a little more ability to create friction. When the lanes really burned up, it was finally too much ball and I had to switch to a pearl surface such as the Match Up Hybrid. All in all, I believe the Hyroad Nano to be one of the best balls on the market for medium to heavy oil and a great choice for many different styles of bowlers

The name says it all! This ball is definitely Intense! It features the RS3 pearl coverstock that has a little larger footprint so you can expect more motion "off the spot." Combine this with a modified RAD core and you have a lot of backend reaction with great hitting power.
I laid mine out pin up 4 x 4 x 2 and it has been very versatile. It is strong enough to work on medium to heavy oil but is very effective when you need to move inside also. It has great recovery and makes a distinct sound when it strikes the pins. If yo are looking for a lot of motion as the ball exists the pattern, this is the ball for you.

The name says it all!!! This ball is definitely INTENSE! This ball features a new, pearl R3S coverstock and a modified RAD core known as RAD e. The R3S coverstock has a little larger “footprint” (more of the surface of the ball contacts the lane) so you will see a lot stronger motion “off the spot.” Combine this with the new RAD e core (modified RAD core) and you have a ball that has a very aggressive angle of entry into the pocket.
I laid my Intense out 4 x 4 x 2. My PAP is 5.25 and up ¼. The ball is very versatile. It is easily able to handle medium to heavy oil but it also can be played inside when the pattern starts to wear down. Compared to my Storm Timeless with the same layout, The Storm Intense provided me with a much cleaner path of travel through the front part of the lane with a stronger and more aggressive mid-lane read and then a sharp angle of entry into the pocket on a 43 foot house pattern.
One final note on the Storm Intense is that this ball has unbelievable hitting power. Knocking out the corner pins is not a problem for this ball, even from deep inside. I believe this ball is a true winner and will be very popular with many different types of bowling styles.

If you are looking for a ball with a lot of length and a very angular motion on the back end, look no further. The 2017 re-issue of the Marvel Pearl reminds us of why this ball was so good in the first place.
I have this ball laid out with the pin 5.5" from my PAP. It works well when you need to a ball that clears the head area and needs to turn the corner hard to slap out the corners. It is very angular at the break point so if you are looking for something smooth at the breakpoint, this may not be the right ball for you. This ball works well on medium oil with an out of the box finish. It definitely has the hitting power to get the corner pins out when you are forced to move inside. Great coverstock, great weight block, great ball. Get them while you can.

Just drilled and threw my new Match Up Hybrid. One of my favorite balls prior to this purchase for standard house shots was the Pearl Match Up. Well, now my favorite ball for standard house patterns is The Match Up Hybrid. The Stinger 2.0 symmetrical core gives me a steady read on what can be wet dry lane conditions. Combine this with new modified Reactor™ Hybrid Reactive coverstock and we have proven winner. This ball delivers a lot of performance for a moderate price point and is hard to beat for regular league bowling.
My Match Up Hybrid was laid out 4 x 2 x 2 and is very similar to the layout on my other Matchup. The main difference I see is a lot smoother transition at the breakpoint without sacrificing length. In other words, this ball travels very cleanly through the front part of the lane, reads the mid-lane and gives me a smooth steady roll to the not pocket. For me, it is not as angular as the pearl model. The only weakness I have seen in this model is when I needed to move very deep. The original pearl reacted a little better from deep inside the lane after numerous games were thrown on them.
I believe this would be a versatile ball for many league bowlers and works well on a variety of house conditions. Very good ball for the price.

Storm Soniq
Layout: 4 x 4 x2.5
Ball Speed: 17.5 mph
Lane Conditions: Tested on 44 foot house pattern, 40 foot US Open Pattern
Box Surface: 1500 grit Abralon Polished

The Storm Soniq was a ball release that I was anticipating for a long time. I was a huge fan of the IQ line and this is where this ball gets its lineage. The Soniq features a C3 HD core which is the most dense Storm core ever produced to date. Why is this important? Consistency. The entire IQ line is known for being a very consistent reacting line of balls and the Soniq is no different.
I tested the 5 x 5 x 3 layout on a regular 44 foot house pattern with the box surface which is 15oo grit and polished. The ball read the mid lane well and still had enough turn on the backend to knock out the corner pins. It will definitely be the first ball out of the bag on wet/dry conditions or normal league shots.
Sometimes I run into problems where when more surface is applied, I now have to force the ball through the front or change angles. When I threw the Storm Soniq, it easily cleared the front part of the lane, made a predictable and solid read in the mid part of the lane and did NOT overreact on the backend. I did not have to change the surface to get the roll and read I wanted and again, it seems to throw pins everywhere and carry light hits. I will be drilling another one of these balls with a smaller pin buffer and a longer pin to PAP distance for shorter patterns.
I would definitely recommend this ball for both league and competitive bowlers. It is a must have in your arsenal.
