Ed Roberts Wins Battle Of Septuagenarians For First PBA Title

In a contest between players with a combined age of 143 years, 72-year-old Professional Bowlers Association "rookie" Ed Roberts of Braintree, Mass., defeated 71-year-old PBA Hall of F amer Roy Buckley of Westerville, Ohio, to win his first PBA title in the PBA60 Wilson & Sons Termite and Pest Control Super Senior Southern Open at Victory Lanes in Mooresville, N.C., over the Labor Day weekend.

Ron Profitt of Brookville, Ohio, also won his first title in the second half of the PBA50 South Region "doubleheader" at Victory Lanes.

Roberts, bowling in his first PBA tournament after years of PBA competition as an amateur, defeated Buckley, 257-219, 214-276, 228-217, in their best-of-three-game title match to win his first PBA title.

Roberts, a member of Team USA 1995, earned $2,400 while Buckley, a seven-time PBA Tour champion in the 1970s era, pocketed $1,200 as the runner-up.

Profitt, 63, captured the PBA50 Budweiser Mooresville South Open, also at Victory Lanes, on Monday, defeating Joe Scarborough of Charlotte, N.C., 199-221, 210-199, 206-132 in their best-of-three-game title match. Profitt, a PBA member since 2007, earned $2,400 along with his first PBA title. Scarborough earned $1,200 for the second place finish.

By virtue of their titles, Roberts and Profitt both became eligible to enter the 2016 FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions which will take place in Shawnee, Okla., Jan. 30-Feb. 7.
