Bowling Offense Vs. Defense

When competing in leagues or tournaments, it is important to know the difference between bowling offense vs. defense.

Offense is your attack strategy for strikes. Included in this strategy must be your decision on initial alignment to the pocket when first beginning competition.

When you begin your a league session, as example, you would likely use one of your bowling balls which reads the lane condition and helps you align to the pocket.

This ball might be your favorite ball most weeks when you bowl league or the ball you generally use the first game to get going.

Regardless, you are on the attack to find the pocket.

After you are aligned to the pocket, you understand full well that you will need to make an alignment adjustment as your ball reaction changes and you no longer hit the pocket solidly or consistently.

You may need a change in bowling balls.

These strategies are the most common and “go to” decisions you will make related to getting lined up to the pocket and adjusting as needed.

There are other adjustments you can use but making angle adjustments or bowling ball changes are generally first adjustment choices in most cases.

It is when you do not strike that you become a defensive bowler.

You must fill frames by converting routine spares. Being either careless or inept at shooting spares is no excuse if you wish to better your average scores.

It is important to attack spares aggressively both mentally and physically.

Being in a defensive mode means you quickly make decisions about how you will convert a given spare or how you will pick up as many pins as possible when you leave an unwanted split.

Bowling defensively also means that you have zero time - repeat, zero time - for anger or emotions. You must place great focus and emphasis on converting your given spare. Never deliver a ball which does not contact a pin or pins!

You absolutely must fill frames by striking or by converting spares.

Bowling offense vs. defense always means you must give your full concentration to the next shot you face and do everything you can to deliver your ball accurately.

Another factor you must pay attention to is the bowling ball delivery path angle of attack. You must make sure your forward swing as you release your ball is headed along your intended path to your aim point down the lane. By trying so hard to get a strike or pick up a key spare you may be prone to forcing your swing and release. In doing so, you might force your swing off the intended delivery path resulting in a poor ball reaction. If you avoid forcing your swing and release regardless of how intensely committed you are to make a good shot, your chances of delivering your ball along the proper path toward your target improve.
