On November 14, 2019, the USBC announced that the U.S. Open field size will be reduced from 144 to 108 for the 2020 competition.
The reason for the cut was to ““improve the integrity of the pattern through qualifying and allow for on-time delivery of squads” by shifting from four players per pair to three players per pair in qualifying.” The reduction of players also means an unfortunate decrease in prize fund for the event. The top five players to cash will pay the same as the 2019 U.S. Open but cashers from 6th place and below will receive less.
The 2020 U.S. Open is set to be held at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska, the smallest center that the event has been held at since the initial field reduction in 2017.
The event will take place on February 18-23, 2020.
