If you are not a high rev player, use the 2nd arrow from the edge of the lane as a base start target and then adjust from there after you are warmed up and are making shots at your normal ball speed.
Following the oil is the time tested method when making adjustments as your ball reaction no longer gets you to the pocket.
Move inside toward the oil build up in the front end of the lane to help restore ball skid distance if your ball begins hooking earlier than you intend.
By the way, adjust your feet positioning on the approach about twice as much as you adjust your sighting target on the lane.
If your ball slides too far and arrives short of the pocket upon impact with the pins, move your sighting target away from the oil build up which is normally closer to the edge of the lane on house oil patterns.
Once again, adjust your feet the same direction about twice as many boards as you adjust your sighting target.
Although this seems to be a basic alignment and adjustment technique, it will serve you well when bowling on freshly oiled lanes or when bowling in leagues at different times of day than you normally bowl.
If you have a favorite bowling ball, use that ball to test the lanes and to get lined up to the pocket. Make sure you have the coverstock prepared with the texture you prefer to get the ball reaction you want.
Simple can be best. Why try complicated alignment techniques which do not match your local lane conditions when you can use the oil pattern to a distinct advantage.
Using the oil pattern properly to get you started in your league can lead you to proper alignment faster than guesswork can.
