The name Total NV stands for Totally New Veneer!! In our continued pursuit to be the innovator in coverstock technology, the R & D chemist team at Ebonite has identified another component in coverstock performance.
In the One series, we explored the effect of absorption rates on hook potential. In the NV series, we will be demonstrating the effect of surface texture on hook potential. We have found that, by manipulating this component, we can enhance total hook and backend motion. We now have two unique tools to use to make Ebonite performance products the state of the art in bowling ball technology.
We are not forgetting absorption rates. Veneer absorption rate is one of the key elements of ball performance, but we now believe that surface texture is just as important in creating dynamic ball motion. By using both of these tools, we feel that Ebonite will continue to dominate the performance ball market.

We drilled 2 of Ebonite's new Total NV. The first layout we used their recommended layout with the pin 5 1/8" from the PAP with the pin above the fingers and the mass bias approximately at 55 degrees. This layout produced more reaction than our Angular One with the same layout while still revving up plenty in the mid-lane and clearing the heads with ease. Our second Total NV we used their Trick Tour Layout. This layout provided more length through the heads then our other drilling with a very distinct movement on the backend. After throwing both balls we did end up using 2000 grit Abralon on the first ball and left the second one with the box finish. These two layouts and finishes gave us a great combination on our standard house condition allowing us to go back and forth between balls as the lane started to break down. Ebonite remains on top with the new release - The Total NV.

I drilled my Total NV with a 5 1/4 inch pin and the mass at 60 degrees. This ball gives me great length through the front part of the lane and makes a strong, angular move off the backend. This ball matches up very well with my Hammer Toxic. It is similar ball motion, only it hooks about 6-7 more boards. This ball would be great for all styles of bowlers.

What I Was Looking For in this Ball and Layout:
Hook, hook, and more hook. I've been lacking a ball that just flat out hooks through heavy volumes of lane oil. I drilled an Infinite One earlier this year, but it was specifically drilled for a trip to Las Vegas and extremely slick conditions. Since that time, I've not had a ball that would really handle extremely thick oil up until this point.
What I Ended Up With in this Ball and Layout:
This Total NV is incredibly aggressive, everywhere on the lane. The ball performs as expected through the front part of the lane. Whenever you have a ball with 6-7 inches of track flare, a 2000 grit Abralon surface, and then you combine it with my axis tilt, it's going to hook early. And that was just fine with me! This ball does exactly what I wanted through the front part of the lane.
At the breakpoint, this Total NV is very strong and induces friction like no other ball in my bag. Whenever I get on a lane condition where I can't get a ball to read the spot, I start thinking about this ball. This ball is strong enough in the transition that I haven't seen anything yet that it won't hook on. The great thing is that it is incredibly controllable at that spot, and it never jumps in an angular fashion. For my game, this is key when I'm bowling on heavier volume patters. The tendency for me is to get reactions that push too long and then change direction too quickly. I feel as if this ball will solve those problems.
As I said earlier, nothing outhooks this ball with the stuff currently in my bag. It handles heavier oil better than anything else I have. I can actually force this ball reasonably well on conditions it's not intended for. Now, it may not be beneficial to do so, but it is nice knowing that you have equipment that is a little more versatile and can be used on a wider range of lane conditions. I can use this Total NV on anything between heavy and medium oil volumes and lengths.

Core Design:
Ebonite's new Spike core provides asymmetric performance, yet is symmetrical in design; that is an intriguing characteristic, to say the least. The RG 2.50 is and the Diff is .051. Testing showed 5" of track flare with all three pin distances (3.5, 4.5 and 5.5). The mass bias strength is potent at .022.
Coverstock:
The coloring mix is an eye-grabber, bathed in purple, black and gold pearl. The 4000 highly polished pearl reactive cover is called Traxion Reactive .030.
Manufacurer's Intent:
Ron Hickland, Ebonite's R&D chief, had this to say: "The Total NV was designed to be a more usable version of the Angular One. It has a brand new coverstock and we are now exploiting a new technology called micro texture. The Spike core is a much stronger design than the Centrex, and we have the ability to move the low RG in different locations depending on the version of the core we use in a ball, making it the most versatile core designed to date."
Test Results:
We naturally compared the Total NV to the Angular One that we tested a while back. Both balls utilize an aggressive asymmetric core, surrounded by a very strong pearl reactive cover. For us, both balls covered a similar stretch of lane, regardless of pattern type. The most noticeable difference was in the average length we saw before it began its move to the pocket. The NV started about 6-9 1/2" sooner with a slightly less angular move off the friction. The NV's carry was average in the oil, but exceptional when sent to the dry. When sanded to 1000, 2000 and 4000 abralon, the Total NV had about 2 boards less total hook than the Angular One with comparable surface grit. We all preferred the Total NV with slightly less gloss than the factory finish provided. We felt the ball performed more seamlessly with this satin shine throughout our test conditions.
When to Use:
We had our best results with created area and pin carry once we broke down our typical test patterns. On fresh patterns, we saw a little too much sensitivity in the oil, but we also saw a consistently strong move off our breakpoints. The ball will turn the corner for softer releases better than most pearls with lesser cores and/or covers. We had very good carry from left of fourth arrow for all testers once enough friction was created. We could play near the track area if we removed lots of hand from our releases, but the strong characteristics of the core/cover combo made this difficult if we didn't maintain very firm speed.

What I Was Looking For in this Ball and Layout:
This is the second Total NV that I drilled, and I was looking for something that was very aggressive but would give me a little different shape than Total NV #1. I was hoping this ball would clean up the front just a little but still make a very aggressive downlane move.
What I Ended Up With in this Ball and Layout:
This ball accomplished exactly what I wanted through the front part of the lane, and it fits my eye very well. This Total NV is scuffed to 2000 Abralon so that it will handle very heavy volumes of lane oil. I used a 5" pin distance to give the ball just a little more length than Total NV #1. The surfaces between the two balls are identical. As with the first Total NV I drilled, this ball lets me know immediately when the heads are no longer slick enough for me to use it.
At the breakpoint, this Total NV is completely different than the first one. Where the first Total NV makes an arcing type of shape, this Total NV turns the corner more quickly and responds faster to friction. My mass bias location is designed to get the ball to roll earlier and smoother than most of my equipment, and it certainly accomplishes that. I believe that you'll see this in the videos, particularly in the overhead shots. This Total NV is the perfect complement to my first one for the way that I throw the ball.
In overall hook, this Total NV is just slightly below my first one. With a slightly weaker pin position, the ball ended up slightly weaker. Perfect! I've also been very impressed with surface adjustments on my Total NVs, particularly with this ball. I've actually used this ball everywhere between 500 grit Abralon and 4000 grit Abralon with polish applied. The ball responds very well to surface changes, but I never feel as if it is rolling too early in the heads. Don't be afraid to make surface adjustments to your ball to fine tune your ball reaction!

Got the Ebonite Total NV bowling ball drilled today. Closer to a rev-leverage layout. Pin about 4 1/2 in from PAP, down and to the right from ring ringer. MB ( mass bias) kicked out in a 45 degree angle from thumb. Minimal side weight drilled down and to right of "bulls eye". Left OOB (out of box) polished condition.
First action while subbing in league. I could stand and 38, roll to 2-3, and crashed the pocket each time! 255-230-249 out the gate. Will join starting lineup with My Power Machine, and Phoenix. Ebonite should really change the name from Total NV, to Total PA(pin action)!
The Total NV marks the first non-Track ball I've ever bought and thrown, and I'm completely happy with it!

Really disappointed with this ball, reacts very much like my Black Widow, could have saved the money. It also looks very bad when compared with the Brunswick Fury. I just ordered a Fury and a Total Inferno from bowlingball.com and love both of these balls better than any of my other stuff. Sold my other stuff and kept the Fury, the Total Inferno, and my EPX. I am covered. The Total NV isn't bad it is just too much like my Widow, that really upsets me. I got the NV to get more reaction, that didn't happen.

What I Was Looking For in this Ball and Layout:
I had recently lost my Angular One to a tragic decision making malfunction, so I was hoping to replace that kind of ball reaction with this Total NV. I was looking for a ball that was clean through the front of the lane, made a very quick downlane transition, and destroyed the pins every time I threw it. Don't we all want that? All joking aside, I was looking for easy push through the heads with a strong downlane move that I could control.
What I Ended Up With in this Ball and Layout:
Perfection with regards to layout vs. ball reaction. This ball is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. You can see in the videos that I made that this Total NV pushes through the fronts much easier than the first two. Part of this is due to the weaker pin position. Much of this is due to me leaving this ball in the factory condition. This Total NV pushes through the front of the lane on all but the driest of lane conditions for me.
This ball does exactly what I wanted at the spot as well. The Total NV is very strong off of the breakpoint, and makes a very angular type of move off of the transition. This ball shape is something that I had with an Angular One drilled identical to this, but I feel like the Total NV gives me a little more consistent read at the breakpoint. Occasionally I would push my Angular One right past the breakpoint, but the Total NV doesn't allow me to do that. This ball transitions better than any polished ball I've seen in some time.
In total hook, this Total NV is a little less than my first two. Most of that can be attributed to surface preparation. But that's what I wanted anyway. When you're watching the videos of these 3 Total NVs, be sure not to confuse backend ball motion with hook. Just because a ball moves a lot in the backend of the lane doesn't mean that it hooks a lot. My first two Total NVs will handle heavier lane oil far better than this one. This Total NV is perfect on medium conditions, and it's deadly on any broken down pattern that plays further left than normal.

The Ebonite Total NV bowling ball is a good readable ball. Warning! It soaks up oil creating a dead reaction. Soak it in dish soap to get it back to life. Good ball but over priced because of the cover stock!
