The "Classic" is back. Roto Grip is proud to announce the release of the SD-73 "Classic". The ball the created the most controversy ever in the industry is back by popular demand.

The Low RG (2.50), High Differential (.075) weight block is illegal by today's USBC standards, bu since it was approved prior to the rule change it is perfectly legal for all USBC and PBA Regional competition.

The Sure Griptm solid reactive coverstock is a performance proven winner over the last several years and is still one of the highest friction coverstocks on the market today.

The Perfect Scale™: Helping Bowlers Make Better Decisions. Because each manufacturer uses a different method for indicating a ball's hook potential, bowlingball.com developed a way for the consumer to compare bowling balls across all manufacturers.

Roto-Grip SD-73 Classic Reviewed by: BJI Reviews By Joe Cerar Jr. 02/13/2007 00:00

Core Design:
The symmetric core's differential rating (.073) inside this flare-monster is 20% higher than the current .060 limit set by the USBC last February. Since this ball's core was submitted prior to the change, it can be released by Roto Grip and used by the consumer. This high differential rating created between six and eight inches of track flare, dependent on our pin distance and weight hole location. The symmetric core's RG is medium low at 2.51.

Coverstock:
This aggressive 73-75 hardness Sure-Grip purple solid reactive cover is factory-finished at 1000 abralon. We found this cover formula clears the fronts and midlane easier than the Ultimate Vision solid cover found on the new Odyssey.

Manufacurer's Intent:
According to Roto Grip President Hank Boomer shine, the SD-73 Classic reintroduction offers bowlers two options in its line for an aggressive solid reactive for medium to heavy oil patterns. The SD-73 utilizes Roto Grip's strongest symmetrical core design with its second strongest solid cover, while the Epic Odyssey offers an asymmetrical core design surrounded by Roto Grip's strongest solid reactive in oil and off the dry. Symmetric cores typically respond quicker and more to friction due to the lower spin time and asymmetric dynamics.

Test Results:
Bowlers looking for an all-purpose solid reactive with plenty of recovery and continuation will surely enjoy this new thoroughbred. The core's strength provides the heart and soul, while the coverstock provides the excitement. We found this ball has a very wide hook and breakpoint shape range, depending on layout and surface prep. We were also able to carry very well on patterns as short as 32" and as long as 42" with either a dull or mid-polished surface. The strong core will undoubtedly be favored by lower and medium rev rate players due to the strong breakpoint motion and continuation. But our high rev player also enjoyed the strong midlane and strong arcing motion off friction. We saw no oil-to dry sensitivity on any of our test patterns, regardless of volume or length. We all felt the ball retained its strong arc motion regardless of hand position used.

When to Use:
Players can use this ball successfully on medium to heavier volumes, regardless of lane surface. We were able to play well inside the oil line and send this Classic about as far out as we wanted, yet still see ample recovery and hit. Only the drier conditions prevented us from sending-it-and-bending-it with the 1000 dull box finish. Polishing the cover with Storm's high gloss polish gave us the length and flip needed for medium to lighter patterns. Both the SD 73 and Odyssey performed very well on fresh patterns as long as we played inside the oil line. Appropriately, neither ball sparked off the friction, which added to the overall control. The SD 73 Classic has a wide range of conditions on which it will excel for most medium-high rev rate players, providing hook, control and superb carry power.

CAUTION: Not a dry lane or a light oil ball. The Roto-Grip SD-73 Classic bowling ball is now my go to ball on all league shots with medium to heavy oil. I pulled out my SD on league night and started practicing. I have a 207 average at this house. Threw it over 25 down out to ten on a 40 ft flat pattern. This ball has the most angular backend out of any ball I've seen. I end up shooting 712 with it that night. In four weeks I have not thrown a game at this house lower than a 230. Must have for any bowler and especially if you like Roto-Grip. I also have the Saga, the Battle, the Horizon, and the Odyssey, and I love them all. My game has improved about 10 to 20 pins since I started throwing tie Roto-Grip line.

I love the Roto Grip SD-73 Classic bowling ball, it because it is a .73 differential ball. It's unnecessary but, so are Lamborghini's. This ball is not forgiving. You will need to know how to read lanes. If you catch a fraction of the wrong board you are going to pay. Don't waste it on anything remotely dry. I have mine drilled with pattern #3 which is for maximum backend reaction. It's a totally fun and difficult ball to master. I haven't shot well with it yet. That's my fault not the balls'. However, when I do throw it correctly it's awesome. If you can control such a drastic entry angle buy this ball and have fun!

Roto-Grip SD-73 Classic Reviewed by: IrishMike837 04/02/2008 15:30

This ball has really helped me out in tournament play unlike any other ball in my arsenal. In this new age of bowling where the way that tournaments are making shots harder to score on is by applying longer and heavier oil; the SD-73 helps to combat these conditions. This is even more true for my game because I have very high ball speed which makes it harder for me to score on heavier oil patterns. When it comes to tournament play and PBA Experience leagues this is usually the first ball I will throw during practice to get an idea of just how oily the lane condition is. For obvious reasons this ball is pretty useless on house shot patterns, but if you are a serious bowler that enjoys competing at the highest level then there is no reason that the SD-73 Classic shouldn't be a viable option in your arsenal.

The SD-73 Classic is by far one of the best balls I have throw.
Drilling:
I drilled mine "Rico" or otherwise known as pin in center of grip, with the CG at a 45 degree angle.
This ball went very long, but had nice backend movement. The ball has proved to be very versatile. It hits very hard.
Overall:
I love my SD-73 Classic, it is an amazing ball. This ball works very well with the Rico Drilling, as the ball goes long, but maintains energy. I would recommend this ball to anyone who is looking for versatility, and amazing hitting power.
