Roto Grip Riot Bowling Balls

Riot Specs
At Roto Grip we pride ourselves in providing a complete line of bowling balls in both value and performance.
The recent introduction of the Dark Star created a nice compliment for those medium to drier patterns, but we still needed a strong solid reactive in the Shield Line for those patterns with a bit more volume up front.
The Riot is just what the kingdom ordered. The utilization of the Ultimate Vision solid reactive coverstock is the key to this addition. The increased surface topography and greater coefficient of friction battles those medium to heavier volume patterns with fierce intensity.
The Photon core delivers the energy behind the Riot. This newly designed medium RG (2.58) and medium differential (.040) core creates greater mid-lane read and increased entry angle to the pocket than its predecessors in the Planet series.
It's time to start your Riot in the Bowling Kingdom!
The Perfect Scale™: Helping Bowlers Make Better Decisions. Because each manufacturer uses a different method for indicating a ball's hook potential, bowlingball.com developed a way for the consumer to compare bowling balls across all manufacturers.

One of the newest additions to Rot-Grip's Shield Line.
Pin to PAP(5 1/8" over 1/8" up) - 5 1/2"
Mass Bias Position - n/a
CG Placement - 4" from PAP
Balance Hole - none
Surface Preparation - Out of Box
What I Was Looking For In This Ball Layout:
We were really just looking to see what this ball would do for the average player using a very safe layout on a THS (typical house shot). This layout has become a very safe layout and you will most likely see a lot of balls leave your local pro shop drilled this way.
In out case placing the pin above the fingers brings the pin to 5 1/2" from my PAP which should help the ball clear the heads and store most of its energy for the back part of the lane.
What I Ended Up With in the Ball and Layout:
I ended up with a very solid ball motion. This ball cleared the heads great even with the little bit of surface it has out of the box. As it transitioned through the middle part of the lane it revved up quite nice and made a solid, smooth move on the backend.
It reacted like one of those balls that you will love to throw because you always know what it will do. I would say it would make a good base line ball to kind of get a feel for what the lanes are doing. In the price point that
the Shield line balls fall into the Riot is a great piece of equipment.

What I Was Looking For In This Layout: This layout typically provides an earlier roll and a more predictable reaction at the breakpoint for me. With the solid Ultimate Vision coverstock, I felt that this ball would work well on fresh, medium oiled conditions.
What I Ended Up With In This Ball Layout: Once I got the ball out on the lanes, I was surprised at how much performance it provided for being in the Shield line of balls. The 4x4 layout did what I thought and provided a very predictable roll in the mid lane and strong reaction at the break. Unlike other mid line balls that I've tested before, this ball revved up great in the mid lane. I haven't seen performance this good at this price point before.
I think this a great ball to start out with and get a feel for the lanes. It makes for once of the most affordable benchmark balls on the market today.
Give the Roto Grip Riot a try. The combination of Ultimate Vision solid coverstock paired with the Photon core make for one of the best benchmark balls I've thrown in years.

Roto Grip Riot Reviewed by: John Brodersen 03/16/2010 21:29

The Riot was drilled with a 4.5-inch pin, 60-degree drill angle and a 40-degree VAL angle. This put the pin just above the ring finger with the CG bumped to the right about two inches. This layout did not require an extra hole with the ending positive side weight being 15/16ths. The cover stock was left OOB.
I threw the Riot and Dark Star on a fresh, softer oil pattern. The Riot, with its dull cover, started up about two to three feet sooner than the Dark Star. The Riot proved to be a stronger ball than I expected and provided a sneaky strong, smooth and predictable motion on this medium pattern. Hit and carry were very good for an entry-level piece. Track flare was in the four inch range and the rings were fairly close but not over lapping, similar to the Dark Star.
Using an existing cover stock with the new Photon core (.040 differential) allows the Dark Star (and Riot) to fill the gap nicely between the stronger Nomads and the weaker Planet series balls. The Riot will make a nice addition to anyone’s arsenal providing a similar but overall stronger ball motion than the Pluto.

I had a 299 game with this ball the second time I used it bowling on synthetic lanes on a house pattern.
My layout on this ball is a 5-3/8 x 5-1/4 with a 5 inch buffer dual angle 80 x 5-3/8 x 75

This has become my go to ball. Very predictable throughout the entire lane. I can use this on house conditions as well as sport conditions. I know if I hit my mark, it will strike. I have had very good luck with the latest Roto Grip releases with sanded finishes. Way to go. For more, check out my video review:

I drilled the Riot with a 55 degree pin/pap, pin 4 1/2' from PAP, below my ring finger, with the cg out and a 7/8" weight hole drilled on a straight line 4" from my grip center to create some hook/stop on the back end. I used the ball in a PBA Sr Regional on the 37' Senior pattern on Brunswick synthetic lanes. The Riot did nothing until it reached the midlane. At that point the ball made a smooth move to the pocket and set up nicely. Carry was excellent. I was able to use this ball for 6 games of qualifying before changing to a ball that would get down the lane as the lanes had started to hook earlier as the pattern broke down.

Review:
I drilled the Riot to have a little less flare than my other solids. I drilled it 5x3x2. The ball that I drilled has a 3.5” pin. This layout put the right above my middle finger. The Riot moved a little more than I expected. I was bowling on a 40’ THS. I was playing 15th board at the arrows and my break point was around the 7th board. I had a little room outside and inside. The Riot got through the heads easily and made a strong move toward the pocket. The ball has good hitting power and scattered the pins very nicely. I shot a 761 1st night out and 730 the 2nd with it in league. The Riot got through the heads clean and consistently. It has a very predictable down lane reaction.
The Riot is going to be a very good choice when you want a predictable ball on some challenging lane conditions. It is also a very good for those on a tight budget. You are getting a ball with great performance at a very affordable price.

The design intent of the Riot is to help fill the gaps between the Planet Series and the Nomad Series. This is a release I have been highly waiting on.
Layout #1 is one of my favorite layouts. I have a Nomad and a Pluto laid out this way, so I figured this would be a good layout to use to really compare the Riot with the Nomad and Pluto. This ball rolls absolutely amazing! It definitely fits in the Roto line where it is suppose to. The best way to describe it is very predictable. With this layout the Riot will definitely be a first ball out of the bag for me. It gives me a very good read of the lanes because of it\'s smooth transition from oil to dry.
Layout #2 is a layout I like to use when the pattern starts to push me farther left and I need the ball to react quicker off the dry. I currently have this layout on a Grand Illusion which has been one of my favorite rolling balls. This Riot is a completely different animal from the other. Compared to my Grand Illusion it is about 5 boards stronger and is much more angular. It is much cleaner through the fronts than layout #1 (due to the surface change) and unleashes a ridiculous move at the breakpoint. This is going to be a great choice for me when the patterns are breaking down and I have to move left still be able to get the ball to recover down lane.
Overall the Riot is a awesome piece of equipment, and for the price you can\'t beat it. If you are looking for something to replace the benchmark ball in your arsenal or looking for something strong and controllable the Riot is definitely something you should look into.
