What I Was Looking For In This Ball Layout:
We had never tested anything from Roto-Grip's planet series. We knew they were good performance balls in the mid-level group. Going into this review we figured we would drill this ball pretty safe hoping to use it in transition or when they started to dry up later in the night. Out of the box this ball was a little intimidating to look at with its 2000 grit Abralon finish we thought this may need a little taming, so we threw some Black Magic polish right on top of the 2000 grit to help it a little.

What I Ended Up With in the Ball and Layout:
First few shots really went long with a minimal amount of movement. We could not tell at first if this was the ball or the Black Magic on the cover. It also did not help that we threw it along side our Cell which of course ran laps around this ball. Throughout the night we threw this ball a few times at some spares and on a few of our fill balls. After a few shots had been thrown we could see the ball start coming alive.

The next week they played much drier than they had been so we used our Cell through the first 2 games and right in the beginning of the third game I pulled the Pluto out. This ball is absolutely amazing on the right condition. They were not burnt dry, you could still use the stronger stuff but the angles were a little tricky. We moved a little right and this ball went nuts.

The amount of skid in heads and the nice read in the midlane set up a great backend ball motion. The Pluto allowed us to play a little straighter and keep the ball in the friction when nothing else did. We had miss right and plenty of hold left. This ball really looked like any high performance ball on this condition. As it stands know there is a spot in our bag for this reaction and hopefully we will have plenty of opportunities to use it.

I have drilled 2 plutos 1 4x4 no weight hole and the 2nd 4x2 with low hole on val. What I most like about both balls are how easy it is to get the ball down the lane and not fight over reaction on the backend when bowling on fresh patterns or short patterns. The best way I can describe the reaction is urethane type reaction. The plutos also hit much better than weaker 3 piece weight block balls do. Anyone who is having trouble with early hook or too much backend should really look into a Pluto.

The Pluto was a great addition to my large Roto-Grip ball arsenal. I find that the planet series of balls give me great versatility on just about all conditions.

I drilled this one at the same time I drilled my Cell and talk about a great ball combo. The Pluto gave me plenty of control but was still strong enough that I could use it right from the start of the night.

Way to go Roto, this one is another winner!

Ball is as advertised. I expected the ball to move a bit more in the oil then it does as it goes pretty much straight, but that is bowler error as I didn't purchase this ball to play in heavier oil. This ball pings off the dry and reads the lane incredibly well for a mid-performance ball. Good ball by Roto-Grip/Storm.

I won my Roto-Grip Pluto at our fall league banquet as a door prize. Untill then I had not owned a Roto-Grip ball. I have used it in the summer leagues and last Sunday night I rolled a 299 with it, my first. I look forward to the fall leagues and to see how this ball preformes. By the way it was a 10 pin. Dave1

The Pluto has been one my go to balls ever since it was released. I have 2 of these drilled 45x4x65 and 30x5x30. These balls are so predicable I can't believe you don't see more of these thrown. They have enough strength where I can throw them on almost any league shot and they work really well on a lot of the sport patterns when they start to break down. High Rev rate players will absolutely love this ball for bowling league, it gets rid of wet/dry reaction that alot of these types of players see.

This was my first real ball. It was a good starter. I would suggest it to anyone who wants to learn how to throw the ball properly. It's hook is very smooth. No sharp backend even with a polish on it. I now have a Virtual Gravity after about 4 or 5 months of throwing the Pluto. They make a pretty good combination. If the lanes start to dry up I just throw it straight inline with the boarda inbetween the first and second arrows and it smoothly hooks into the pocket. I have noticed with this ball it is hard to play an inside line if your not a cranker.

I bought this ball to compliment the rest of my Roto Grip line hoping that it would give me something to go to when the lanes started to burn up. This ball does exactly what I was looking for. It gives me great length through the heads, then just gives me a easy roll to the pocket. I love this ball for drier lanes or tougher patterns where I have to keep the ball in play. Great addition!

Advanced Layout 1

  • Locate the mass bias by drawing a line from the pin through the CG. Find the location 6-¾" from the pin along this line, and mark it with "MB". This is the location of the mass bias or the secondary pin
  • Place the major pin 5" from the player's PAP and place the "MB" on the player's ball track next to the thumb hole
  • Use this layout for length with a medium backend reaction.
  • This layout is great for medium to light oil. Also works well for players with higher rev rates.

Advanced Layout 2

  • Locate the mass bias and mark it with "MB"
  • Place the major pin 4-¼" from the player's PAP and locate the mass bias (MB) along the player's PAL
  • This layout will most often require an extra hole, so place this hole on the PAP and remove excess side weight to "0".
  • This layout works well to produce medium length and heavy midlane roll. Usually works well on medium to heavy oil, especially longer oil patterns.

Advanced Layout 3

  • Locate the mass bias and mark the spot with an "MB". Remember, the mass bias is a fine tuning device used by advanced players.
  • Place the major pin 3-3/8" from the PAP and locate the mass bias halfway between the player's ball track and PAL
  • Place the extra hole, if necessary, on the player's PAP, removing excess side weight to less than 1 oz.
Note: This is a "High Flare" layout that should only be used by low rev players seeking maximum ball reaction!

Advanced Layout 4

(For this layout we will select a ball with a pin distance of 2-5" from the CG)
  • Place the major pin 1-½" from the PAP. Remember to keep the pin along the line located between the PAP and the player's finger holes.
  • Place the mass bias in the player's ball track.
  • Check side weight to see if an extra hole is necessary. If so, place the hole on the PAP.
  • This layout will produce heavy roll with a controllable backend reaction. Players with extensive side roll or high rev players will love this layout to help control dry, short oil patterns with very dry backends
