New Shoes
Its that time of year. Leagues are back in session and you find that it might be the right time for a new pair of shoes. Buying new shoes is about as complicated as buying a new ball. There are shoes that look like tennis shoes, some look a little like golf shoes, and there are even shoes with interchangeable soles and heels. There are so many choices, it can be confusing. Athletic style shoes are probably the most available shoe in your local pro shop. They are relatively inexpensive and come with universal slide soles. Universal means that the bottoms of both shoes have slide soles and may be used by left or right handed bowlers. Beginners and intermediate bowlers often sport the athletic style shoe. These shoes are meant to last between two and five seasons, depending on how often you bowl. Performance shoes are a bit different than the athletic style. The bottoms of performance shoes are not the same. The slide shoe is very much like an athletic, but the other shoe has a non-slip surface. The reason for this is so the bowler can have traction on the step before the slide. Why is traction important? Traction in the step prior to the slide will help increase momentum and drive into the finish. This drive can help create more leverage, which will strengthen the release. Performance shoes start in the intermediate price point for man-made materials. Leather and the interchangeable option can make the price a bit higher. Higher quality shoes will last longer with proper care. There are some bowlers out there that have had the same shoes for ten years or more. Interchangeable soles and heels are something to consider if you bowl in a few different houses or travel to tournaments. Changing the shoes to adapt to the different lane surfaces can help keep your game more consistent. Do you really need that high priced shoe? Consider how often you bowl, what your bowling goals are, what your budget is, and other factors like comfort, style, etc. Remember when choosing a performance shoe, make sure you choose right handed shoes if you bowl right handed or slide on the left foot and left handed shoes if you bowl left handed or slide on the right foot. Shoes are one of the most important parts of any sport. Your pro shop operator can help you select the right shoe for your game. |
