What I Was Looking For In This Ball Layout:
It has been a long time since I threw a urethane cover ball. When say a long time I mean like 10+ years.

I figured I would use one of my favorite layouts so I would have some base line to go off of and see what happened. I was hoping that it would be an aggressive enough layout to get a decent read on a fresh pattern. I know urethane tends to roll really strong and kind of set at the break point as opposed to reactive stuff the continues to flip through the pins.

My logic was this layout would start the ball up nice and strong and give me a little more continuation down lane before it set up at the break point.

What I Ended Up With in the Ball and Layout:
I have to say that I am impressed with my knowledge of urethane. :-) This ball did exactly what I thought it would. The first few shots I threw with it was a reality check that this was not reactive and I had to jump right. After I got in the right part of the lane the ball rolled really good. I can see how some peoples game developed from throwing urethane because you cant really do what you would normally do with reactive balls with your hand. Once I started getting right up the back of the ball of adjusted my ball speed I loved the ball motion.

Immediately I started thinking of conditions this would work great on and different layouts I could use on this ball. Since the ball does not over react or over read friction you can get pretty creative. I then started to realize why you saw so many Storm Naturals on tour last season. Pros must love having a good urethane ball they use during those brutal qualifying rounds.

All in all I think the addition of a urethane ball to your bag is a smart choice and the Grenade is the one to go with.

After 5 years of a continual decline in average (223 down to 198), I knew it was time for a drastic change. The aggressiveness of the equipment nowadays was too much for my old style down-n-in game so I went back to basics with some new equipment (i.e. urethane). Wow, did my game change in a hurry. The Grenade gave me the best reaction for what I was looking for. Average is on the rise and 2 tournament placings in the last 3 weeks (loved watching the crankers fade away as the conditions became funky) added some much needed gratification. It is indeed a pleasure to bowl again, and the Grenade has become my answer.

Used the recommended drilling pattern, with 5" pin f/PAP. Gave me some swing area to the right while holding well on those dreaded pull shots. Carries the 4 where before the shot would have been on the nose. Have to say I love it. May buy another trying a different drilling pattern.

If you need something for a Typical House Shot, this is a good ball for that. The more you sand this ball down, the more it will do. if you're a two hand bowler and need a straighter ball, this will pack a punch! It hits a bit softer than a reactive ball though. If the lanes have heavy oil, this ball won't do the job well, unless you like playing straight down the boards and want to leave corner pins. Other than that, probably the best urathane ball on the market.

This ball is drilled with a 5" Pin from my PAP. The flare potential on this ball is medium but it has a late mid-lane read with a heck of a backend move. The mass bias is in a very strong and it has a weight hole on the vertical axis line. This layout gave me a good amount of length with a very angular reaction in the back. It is a clean, smooth, and very controllable reaction that allows my ball to hit like a truck. This ball works great on medium to short oil patterns and is definitely a great ball to throw in your bag.

I am on the Wright State Bowling and this year I bought the Grenade for dry oil patterns. I got it drilled to go long and smooth. I have not got to use this ball much yet but the couple times I have thrown it, I liked how smooth it was. Its a good ball for me to use when my pluto hooks too much.

Have reviewed several balls on here and I have liked most of them, but not this one. The carry with this ball has been terrible ! I was thinking it may have just been one certain house I was in but nope for me, I have tried three different houses and it just hits like a pillow. It does have the smooth arc, and doesnt snap off like a reactive would, but I just cant get it to carry. I had high hopes for this ball, but for me it is just horrible. Definitely wouldnt buy again. Very dissapointed and feel like money was wasted on this ball.

Best go to ball in my arsenal. i love this ball. Have a tradional drilling of 3 inch from PAP with CJ Located in middle of the ball. I had it drilled with a 3 inch pin.

Ball is great when the conditions warrant it. I usually use this as a go to spare ball for 10 pins, and the transition to the 3rd game when backends are burnt up. This ball holds the line well when Reactive over moves on the backends.

Grenade – (with the pin up between fingers) Specs 5x4 3” buffer 60x5x40 (dual angle)
This ball is very weak and has a really good mid lane read. It does not overreact on wet/dry conditions but it is oil sensitive. This ball works best on dryer lanes and is very smooth and predictable when lanes are broken down and all your other bowling balls are hooking way too much. This ball works well on wood or synthetic lanes and sport patterns. It will allow you to work closer to the pocket without over hooking it to the head pin.

Grenade – (with the pin on the axis) Specs 3x5 2” buffer 110x3x40 (dual angle)
With these specs the ball has a little more mid lane roll and a little less back end. It works even better on dryer lanes and has more of an arc shape reaction. I used this layout at the USBC Nationals in Reno and it kept me out of trouble on tougher lane conditions. I would recommend this ball for all high rev. players looking for something that is straighter and smoother than anything they have ever thrown.

Retrothane coverstock is a hit. The grenade is a great ball for lighter oil patterns and dryer areas to the outside part of the lane. The photon core that has been so successful in the Dark Star and Riot is exactly what the coverstock needed to excel in this newly reintroduced urethane market. It allows the ball to drive through the pins and maintain its entry angle even after deflection occurs from the pins. Entry angle is still created from playing a more outside line and the balls breakpoint is more towards the middle of the lane (30 to 35 foot mark)

This ball takes extremely well to surface changes allowing for players of many styles to enjoy. Anyone who wants to play up the boards and near the outside part of the lane as it starts to breakdown will enjoy using this ball most. Players with a higher rev rate will enjoy the controllable motion of this urethane cover and also the power created by the photon core. Whether or not your using this ball as your spare of dry lane ball, you will love the predictable move and controllable motion.

I just got my grenade drilled today and wow...thats all i can really say. I chose to go with a weaker drilling because i want the ball not to react to much in the backend. What i got was just that this ball is sheer awesomeness. no matter where i played it i got what i was looking for. The grenade definetly compliments my mutant cell and i can get that pesky ten pin a little easier...but i will get a spare ball for that soon enough. great product awesome control and just all around beast

I laid out my grenade 70/5/30

This layout works great on this ball, it allows me to stay left when I am feeling lazy and don't want to move deep inside, which is a good thing. Sometimes after working the pro shop all day, I don't want to have to think alot when I am bowling. When I am in this mood, I just grab my grenade and stand left and just play in the track, which is really fun sometimes.

The grenade is super clean through the fronts and doesn't give that big back end reaction, which I what I need and want some of the time. I can see myself using this ball more than I imagined.

The Roto Grip Grenade has the attributes of two of my all-time favorite balls. Its old school urethane reminds me of the old X-2 roto star. it doesn't overreact in the dry and is excellent for shorter oil patterns in the 40' range.
What makes this ball unique is the old silver streak weight block which gives the ball a little extra change of direction and hitting power.
I drilled my Grenade 4 x 4. I'm an old school stroker tweener 14/15 revs and 15 mph. This ball lets me control the pocket. It keeps the pins low on the deck and can rip racks more than expected. Its also a good spare ball on heavier oil conditions.

I drilled my Grenade a couple of weeks ago. The layout I used is an old school layout, axis leverage. The pin is 3 3/8 from my axis and is on my mid-plane. The cg is on my axis point with a 1 1/8 giant hole drilled through it. Being a tournament bowler, this ball is strictly meant to use on low volume short patterns. I have used it a few times now on a few different Cheetah patterns. This ball allows me to get on top of the friction and stay as close to it as I want, it never over-hooks. The reason this ball is so effective is as the games pass you don't have to change zones. Your adjustments with this ball will be to move right and slow your ball speed down while increasing your rev rate as the oil carries down the lane. Very impressed with this ball, if I am bowling on a short pattern, this ball will be in my bag. Check out the detail at www.rotogrip.com

Grenade Ball Review - written by: Ron Case (RotoGrip Staff)

My Axis is 5 5/8 right, ¼ up, my speed is average and I would consider myself with higher revs but more up the back. So not a cranker but not really straight either.

Drilled Pin & CG 4” from PAP.

Well it’s urethane and the definition of urethane should be, friction needed.

If you bowl tournaments and the lanes break down we all need this ball. It’s very smooth and predictable. It has no sharp movement which can help you when the lanes are fried.

If you only bowl on house shots you will need a lot of hand to see much movement here.

Honestly with my game I didn’t think I would ever need urethane again, but I wish I had it last year in league on the Broadway pattern. It would’ve worked great right up 2 board. Now I have it and I need to find another excuse.

OH YEAH!!!!! THIS BALL IS AWESOME. OLD SCHOOL. I TOOK THE GRENADE AND USED IT ON A 35' FLAT PATTERN. THIS BALL WAS AMAZING. IT READ THE DRY BOARDS AND MADE A NICE SMOOTH MOVE TO THE POCKET. I WAS PLAYING UP 2nd & 3rd BOARD. I KNEW THIS BALL WAS GOING TO BE GOOD, JUST DIDN'T KNOW HOW GOOD. WITH THE SMOOTHER MOVE TO THE POCKET, IT KEPT THE PINS ALIVE AND DANCING AROUND ON THE PIN DECK. THIS BALL WOULD BE A MUST FOR ANYONE, BUT THE HIGH REV PLAYERS WOULD REALLY LIKE IT. AS THE CONDITION OF THE LANES BROKE DOWN, I STAYED IN PLAY WITH THE GRENADE. GREAT JOB.

The Grenade gave me a great continuous roll down the lane. I have used this ball during my league, and it is a great ball for me to use during the breakdown. I was able to maintain my target line, while balling down to the Grenade as opposed to making a drastic move inside. The Grenade also reacted great on the Cheetah pattern. It read the lanes without overreacting or rolling out on the shorter pattern.

Ball specs – 15 lbs 3 oz, 3.08 oz top weight, and a 3 1/4-inch pin.

The Roto Grip Grenade was punched using the dual angle layout method, 5-inch pin by 60-degree drill angle by 30 degree VAL angle. If you are using the Storm method, the layout is a 5-inch pin, 4 ½-inch mass bias, and a 2-inch pin buffer. An X-hole was not needed and the finish was left OOB.

The Grenade wraps a urethane cover around the Photon core, which is the same core that powers the Riot and Dark Star. It has been many years since I’ve rolled a urethane ball and the same number of years since experiencing the urethane ball motion. One word can describe the ball motion of the Grenade and that word is smooth. With the OOB dull cover the Grenade had a tendency to pick up earlier than I was expecting but once the cover absorbed some oil that earliness went away. Hit and carry were good. Smooth and predictable is what you would expect from a urethane ball and the Grenade delivers both very well. The Grenade will be a condition specific shell (short patterns, low volume patterns, extreme over-under patterns) but it could provide you with a distinct advantage on those conditions.

i new when this ball came out that this ball wasnt going to do much.because of the urethane cover but still has a pretty strong core shape to it.When i drilled mine it gave me a nice controll but smooth reaction to the pocket.Even for when i was using it on the shorter lane patterns it didnt over react for me playing up the boards.

My Grenade is laid out with the pin drilled out in ring finger being place 3 inches from axis and cg being place in the center of my grip.Box finish is out of the box.For bowlers out there looking for something for dryer lane conditions after those long block tournaments or for the shorter sport patterns this is the ball i would use.

Using the core found in the Riot and Dark Star, Roto Grip has wrapped a urethane, 2000 grit abralon finish, coverstock (retrothane), around the core to give this ball the same Rg and Differential as the Dark Star and Riot. As the newer, stronger covers, tend to burn up lane conditions faster than in the "old" urethane days, urethane is making a return. From the novice to the advanced bowler, a urethane cover will provide a more controlled ball reaction on light to drier conditions than reactive. Altering the surface combined with proper pin placement, should give any bowler the "go to" ball that he/she needs when conditions call for more control and less reaction.
I drilled my Grenade with the pin slightly above my ring finger with an approximate 65 degree pin/pap angle. I used it on a PBA league, 35' cheetah pattern. When compared to a mutant cell pearl, I was 8-10 boards left with my feet using a much straighter line through the front of the lane. Ball reaction was good, pin hit good. As I stated, this ball is going to be condition specific depending on the individual's style.

Grenade

1980’s coverstock meets a year 2000 core design. Roto Grip used the Photon core found in the new Riot and Dark Star. Just added an old school urethane coverstock and you found a secret weapon. This won’t be a benchmark ball but I can think of several conditions that you could benefit from the Grenade:

Short oil
Really clean back ends.
Long format tournaments when the oil pattern disappears.
PBA Cheetah and Viper patterns on high friction surfaces.
Anyone with a high rev rate.
Great for practicing.

Great addition to the Shield line and maybe well overdue. I would keep it away from oil, where the reactive resins absorb oil the urethane picks up oil and can become a bit slimy.

As expected, the Grenade is very smooth going down the lane. It does not make any sudden turns in any direction. I have not had a ball that reacts like this in a very long time. On a THS I found a nice line standing on 20 (with my right foot) and throwing straight up 10. The Grenade made a slow move toward the pocket. I bowled a game with this ball on Viper and it did not move much at all. I was standing on 15 and setting the ball down on 3 and it was still not getting to the pocket. I had to point it where I wanted it to go as it was only moving about 4 to 5 boards. I cannot wait to try this ball out on a burnt shot or even Cheetah.

I have highly been looking forward to the the release of the Roto Grip Grenade. With the shorter patterns that we see in some tournaments this is going to be a ball that sees a lot of action.

It has been a while since I threw urethane so I just used one of my favorite layouts on this ball. I tested this ball on the Broadway Kegel pattern which is 37 feet in length. Normally on this pattern I have a hard time playing straight due to how quick the ball comes of the end of the pattern and it forces me to play farther left use wider angles through the fronts. With the Grenade I was able to play right around 5 and the ball rolled off the end of the pattern instead of jumping. The hitting power of the Grenade is absolutely awesome and unlike some urethane I have seen thrown it never died in the midlanes.

One of my favorite parts about this ball is the moves I made as the lane broke down. Normally I move 3 and 1's or 5 and 2's which widens my angles through the front and puts me in jail eventually. With the Grenade I was able to make parallel moves (1 and 1) and never lost my reaction. I felt like I could throw this ball all day and still have a look.

All in all the Roto Grip Grenade is a remarkable ball for anyone bowling on shorter patterns and for high rev players or slower ball speeds it is a absolute must buy! Great release Roto Grip!!!

Let me start by saying that I have been looking forward to this release for some time (giggity). I actually got even better results than I had hoped for. This ball is cleaner through the front than many of the other urethane balls on the market, but still maintains the smooth ball reaction I associate with urethane balls. I heart it very much. The reaction I get looks superb on the house pattern in the center in which I have my shop, but has also looked good in the early stages of Chameleon and on Cheetah as well. It is an excellent compliment to my Boomered Dark Star as well- providing a ball which starts a little earlier and is a little smoother. A very logical transition is to use the Grenade in the early part of a shift on Chameleon or Cheetah and go to the Boomered Dark Star as the lanes break down. This is totally a usable and solid piece with a throwback look and a rad logo design.

This ball is perfect for dried up lanes or short patterns. I bowl in a wood house with DRY backends. Its also a very short pattern. I don't have a lot of revs and my speed is about 15-16mph. But every ball I had was hooking out of the house. I bought a slingshot (just for this house) great ball but OMG no way. Then I bought a Hammer rayzr just as aggressive as the slingshot. My avg was dropping fast. No amount of adjustments helped and I tried them all! I talked to my pro shop guy and he said I should try a urethane! I went with the Grenade cause it was a little cheaper price. Best decision ever! Have bowled 6 games with this ball and all 200+ games! With one 699 series. At the same house in 6 weeks I couldn't shoot a 600 series. The grenade gave me my confidence back and a weapon in my arsenal that can make the pins explode in extreme conditions!
