Surface Preparation - Box Finish 1000 Abralon

What I Was Looking For In This Ball Layout:
We were looking for flat out hook in this layout and surface combination. We knew this ball was supposed to be the strongest Columbia ball to date and we just wanted to see how aggressive it really was. Most likely we will end up changing the surface preparation after we do our initial test. We do not run into enough heavy oil to warrant such an aggressive surface but you never know. Sometimes with newer high performance balls you will find you can use the more aggressive finishes because the ball are so good they still have enough energy to finish well on the backend.

What I Ended Up With in the Ball and Layout:
I love doing ball reviews when everything works out just as we thought. The Columbia Resurgence proved to be one of the strongest ball releases this season. I left the ball at box finish which is a lot heavier grit than I would normally even try to use but every year I like to have one really strong early rolling ball just in case. This is my ball for that this season so far.

In the heads just as expected the Resurgence grabs the lane early and rolls through just about any amount of oil. We threw this ball in practice because they did seem to be quite tighter than normal. Even though I ended up putting the ball away early on I could tell what we had. Obviously if you were going to leave the cover alone like we did you could not use this ball when there is any amount of friction in the heads.

Midlane was strong as expected again. The ball motion was a great continuation of the reaction we saw in the heads. I am telling you if you are seeing heavy volumes of oil the Resurgence was made for that.

The backend motion was strong but obviously it had a little less by the time it got to the backend. If I was lined up right with the ball and played the front and middle part of the lane correctly we were fine. It still hit really hard for as smooth as it ended up being on the backend.

Check back on this review at a later date because we may try polishing the shell to see what we get out of the ball. It is great to have a ball in the bag that hooks this much but it is not always needed.

I am a collegiate bowler, and bought this ball the day it came out, because I prefer Columbia over any of the others. I have quite a few games on it already and this ball is amazing. It has a strong hit hook, even on heavier oil patterns, and it destroys the pins on the backend. This is the most pin action I have ever gotten from a ball. I have bowled nothing under a 230 with this ball.

I went out yesterday and got the Resurgence because my other ball I was using just got a little too old (9 years). The way I throw my ball is hard with a curve. So, when I found out that the Resurgence will help me, I got it. I bowled a 123, 165, and a 189 with it just open bowling. I know that I will hit the pocket more when I bowl with this in my league cause of the oily lane conditions. AWESOME Ball. I recommend this ball to any bowler that if their ball just spins and not break? You gotta have this.

I had a bunch of great balls during my years of bowling. But the Columbia 300 Resurgence bowling ball is the ball I got the most out of. I do really enjoy playing with it every time. I polished it up a little and got more length, and it hits hard in the pocket. I would as you may understand strongly recommend it!

Been out of bowling for about 8 years. Come back and this is the ball I purchase. Awesome. The ball makes it so easy to come back in and almost pick up right where I left off and actually after about 3 weeks of learning the ball I feel I am becoming better than I was before. This ball can hook through the heaviest of oil and does so much of the work for you, your fingers, hand, and arm will thank you.

When I first got the ball I threw 26 shots with 24 strikes.I loved the reaction of this ball so much I bought one for my wife and daughter. I bowled 8 700+ series and several 680+ series. My wife bowled her first 700 series with it and my daughter bowled her first 600 with it. now that I have a few games with the ball it seems to have lost its drive so I sanded it to several grits from 500 to 4000 and I also polished it but I can't seem to get the that drive it used to have back.It appears the coverstock is dead now.My wife uses her ball now for picking up the 10 pin, her ball did the same as mine.I would really like to know what happened to the ball and if it could be fixed .

this ball is everything i could have asked for. When I go jersey, it destroys the pins. When I go flush in the pocket, it leaves nothing, and even when i struggled in a tournament recently i missed the head pin 3 times in a row and the action managed to take out a rail everytime. I recommend this ball to anyone, who plays on a medium-heavy oil house shot and keeps the ball speed around 17 with a high rev rate

This ball cracks easy when drilled or filled. I didn't like its preformence as much as my other bowling balls. Stays pretty much in a straighter line.

I recommend it for a spairball or a dry lane ball.

Very Happy with this bowling ball and columbia in general!! I have this as my strongest ball with a Pulse as the next step down!! With these 2 bowling balls i have no problems adjusting to the lanes!! The weakest ball i have is a Super Beast!! 3 of the best bowling balls on the lanes in my opinion!! since i bought my Resurgence i have not shot below 590!!

Positiv: Super Ball, der besonders auf schwerem Öl noch das tut was er soll. Wo viele andere Bälle schon aufgeben.

Negativ: Er verlangt jedoch eine genaue Abgabe. Er verzeiht selten mal einen Fehler.

I was very excited when i purchased this ball, however most of the reviews claim the ball hooks like crazy which is fine since most of them are probably crankers, but for us strokers out there dont expect this ball to come roaring back to the pocket. If you cant rev it up don't expect anything spectacular, thats why they say the ball has amazing hook POTENTIAL instead of an amazing hook. on the other hand the way this ball hits the pocket is an understatement, it carries extremely well. The way it creams the pins make you look good. When this ball hits the pocket i get the same pin action that a cranker would.

3/5(Hook) 5/5(Hitting power)

This ball is a perfect ball for heavy oil. Unfortunately there are rarely any other times I have been able to use it. It did work very well on the short shot at Junior Gold playing up the gutter. The resurgence is very easy to read how it is reacting, as it has never overreacted for me. It just always consistently takes that turn after pushing through the oil.

im 17 years old and throw the ball around 16 miles an hour with a medium to high rev rate and average 164. i purchased is ball and left it with the 1000-abralon finish and first series i bowled was a 615. my reaction on a 40 foot house shot on synthetic lanes is very good. i start the ball out from 20 and the breakpoint is aroun 6-8. it skids through the heads and starts rolling a little over half way down the lane with a huge backend snap to the pocket. my last two weeks in league on synthetic i shot 646 twice with a 257. my only problem with the stock finish is on wood lanes. even on a 40 foot house shot the ball refuses to hook more than 10 boards. it picks up roll very quickly and you have to get the ball to the outside fast but once it hits dry it grabs and hooks immediatlel and does not continue hooking. if you are bowling on wood lanes you have to have pin point accuracy every time to strike or you are screwed. this ball is perfect for synthetic lanes though. so if you bowl on synthetic then purchase this ball immediatly and leave the cover alone if your looking for a big hook ball. if your on wood i recommend taking this ball to 4000-abralon if not polishing it. but even with very heavy oil in the heads the ball just seems to absorb it and reacts like its totally clean

I have bowled about 20-30 games on my Resurgence and I love it for the right lane conditions (heavy oil). Mine is drilled using a low-flare layout. It starts hooking early then takes off when it hits the backend. I left the original 1000 grit coverstock on it and just bought a couple more sanding pads to keep it that way. It hits like a truck (16lb). I don't think I'll be using it much on typical house lane conditions, but it works well on the PBA Experience patterns. It needs a lot of oil upfront to get down the lane.

I love this ball. It is my go-to for heavy oil.

I just started bowling again within the last year and bought a black widow at the recommendation of the pro shop, that ball had a tendency to either brake too hard if the lanes were dry or it would flatten out and die if it hit any oil what so ever. My dad was telling me I wasn't getting enough fingers/spin on it, but I was spinning the crap out of it...

Anyway, I was convinced my problems were with the ball, so I did some research and decided to buy me the resurgence, I got it drilled to the #1 spec (medium to heavy oil with long controlled hook). Needless to say, I was right, it wasn't my technique, it was my ball (I think it was drilled bad). Anyway, since I've been using the resurgence, I just crush the pocket on all the lane conditions I've faced so far. It's even working well for me on very dry conditions, which was a big shocker for me, because all the reviews I looked at said it wouldn't. So I've been very pleased with my experiences with this ball, and I want to keep it in good shape by cleaning it after every session so hopefully I can keep it around for a long time.

Now that I know I can throw this ball on dry conditions, I'll probably just turn my black widow into a paper weight.

I bought this ball to compliment my Hammer Purple Vibe and Columbia Action Max. I have it drilled to create a large but smooth hook arc and has a balance hole. Let's just say I coldn't be happier with this ball... once I got used to it. If there is any ounce of friction on the lanes, this ball hooks well and strong. If the lanes are flooded past 40' I still have to slow the ball down, but once the lanes start to break down just a tad I can start to get very aggressive. I'd like to get another Resurgence and drill it so it has more roll and flip, so when the lanes are flooded I can still be agressive and have a ball that reacts the same way. In conclusion, great ball in every way.

On only my second league night that I brought this ball out, It paid itself off to where I could go and buy 3 of these balls. I must say that I was very impressed with the ball on the back end. It REALLY carries into and through the pocket. This is my first high end ball that I've purchased and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to step up in their game. I hold about a 200 average on synthetic lanes that tend to dry up pretty quick, I bought this looking to have a really hooking ball for the City Tournament and the upcoming PBA leagues, and as long as there's oil on the lanes it works wonders.. looking forward to tackling the shark with this sucker.

This is my first high performance ball. I've been bowling since I've been 6 and decided just now that I was sick of playing from the outside and hoping the lane conditions weren't to heavy. I picked this ball up and taught myself how to throw from the inside more. While learning how to throw more from the inside, I've gone from an average of 180 the first week to throwing my first 800 series.... EVER! I threw my first 300 a few nights ago and have obviously more confident with this ball. The amount of backend you get from this ball is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! On a fresh/heavy lane condition, I can throw this ball 10-5 without an issue. I've thrown my Hyde a few times on the same line just to compare, and, on that line, it's great for picking up a 6 spot leave. When the lanes burn up though, you need a less aggressive ball, which, I learned very quick. Very fun ball to roll. Found a new love for the game after my brief hiatus.

I got this ball drilled using the dual angle layout, and wanted to really still like Columbia even though they have been bought out. Call me crazy but I can not see why everyone rates it really well, I believe it is mediocre at best. All of my honor scores are with Columbia and I'm going to need something else from these guys to keep my buying anymore of their equipment, because its obvious that the other companies under the ebonite umbrella are getting more attention than columbia.
Honestly this is ball one would pull out when the conditions are crazy terrible, like the "I need a miracle to happen" ball. At a recent tourney I shot a 143 with my attitude, and pulled out the resurgence and shot nothing under 215-220 for the remainder of the tournament. This is my ten-pin ball as well as my miracle ball. Buy one if you want a arcing ball, otherwise I cannot recommend it.

I have been bowling with the Momentum since the first of the year and my scores were always going up. However there were times when a lot of oil was on the lane and my ball was driving too long past the pocket. Well this ball was the answer to my problems. The Resurgence just ate up all that all and when it hit the backend it smashed into the pocket and cleared the deck. This ball can not be forced into anything, just trust the way you have it drilled and the pins will fall again. I am only leaving single pins for spare pickups now no more splits. I left the ball matte because I am not a cranker it did take a few rolls to get the feel of it. I feel so confident now with package I have. The Resurgence was the missing link to bowling future.

I got the Resurgence on the advice of the local pro shop where I bowl. I have been having trouble with carry on my other balls this season, and my average is down as a result. Since I have gotten the Resurgence I have raised my average in one league from 206 to 216. I have shot an 813, my first 800 in over 7 years, and have had 3 different games with 9 strikes in a row. This ball hooks hard and hits the pocket even harder. It just blows the pins off the rack. I'm having no problem at all with carry now. Would recommend this ball to anyone.

I had not bowled in a league for many years and have had the same bowling ball for years. My average has never been over 160. I am a lefty bowler and after getting the Resurgence, I have bowled my highest series ever, 735, my highest game ever, 257 and have averaged over 200 for the past 4 months. It seems all I have to do is roll the ball in roughly the same spot and it almost always hits the pocket. I get great pin action and the ball just powers through the pins with no deflection. Tonight I set a new personal mark with 8 straight strikes. Although I did not bowl a 300 tonight I feel I will very soon. Also want to mention that I only bowl once a week and never practice. This ball is fantastic, I only start it down the alley and it does the rest.

I just really don't see what the big deal is about the Resurgence.. Everyone's saying that it hooks to much and that is not a beginners ball. But I beg to differ. It also says it creams heavy oil. The Resurgence needs some games to find its real surface. So, after about 15-20 games, you'll find the ball as it is.
It is no ball for rookies (!). But it scores well for players, who let the ball go its way. If you don't force it - if you let it go its own way, it's perfect.
It is a good extension of the ball set for heavy oiled lanes. Don't try to use it on a dry lane.
High rev players, as well as, high track players will find a good reaction as long as they let the ball do the work.

I've had this ball for 2 months. The Resurgence is very smooth and very easy to control. It works best in heavy oil delivering pinpoint accuracy. The Resurgence hits like a ton of bricks only when pushed outside on solid pocket shots. The Brunswick Fury hits hard every time no matter the shot in comparison. The Resurgence is my main ball in my bag. I'm using the stock finish so far without polish or sanding the surface. I've bowled games between 200-245 with this ball and I've only been playing seriously in league for one year. I bowled in high school back when the Rhino Pro's and other reactive balls were introduced.
I think it's more important that you have the same pro shop work up all of your balls for consistency. I've got 6 balls and this one ranks number #1 right now in my bag.
I bowl with the Resurgence from the far left and sometimes the track. Full rollers will need a lot of speed to avoid going brooklyn.

I just bought the Columbia 300 Resurgence bowling ball after reviewing many other balls. I based buying this ball on just the Perfect Scale to see how accurate the Perfect Scale was for performance. I am glad that I did, this ball ball really comes from no where and really eats the pins up. I had pulled it straight out of the box and threw on just groomed lanes. I bowled nothing lower than a 215 and I had thrown 5 games. I can't wait to see how it performs on lane conditions that I bowl, on a regular basis.

Columbia 300 Resurgence Reviewed by: Vonramon 09/05/2007 17:32

Using the factory's dull finish, I had the Resurgence drilled to my preferred layout: pin about 1/2 inch above the ring finger and CG turned at about 40 degrees. Upon taking the Resurgence to an oily house immediately after the lanes were dressed, all I can say is "WOW!!"(one translation)
Not only does the Resurgence hit like a locomotive on steroids, it seems to resist (ignore) the oil in that it HOOKS from deep inside--or way outside--lines, regardless. I have not seen a ball terrorize oil patterns and HOOK as aggressively as the Resurgence since the big block SUMO of yesteryear. All serious bowlers (who face heavy oil conditions) should have at least one Resurgence bowling ball either in their bag or in their car for when "the need arises." And, the need will invariably arise.
The Resurgence is not for DRY or MEDIUM-DRY lanes. Enough said.

Just got the Columbia 300 Resurgence and tried it once. It hooks a ton and has lots of carry. But I found out too late that Columbia got bought out by Ebonite and this ball is probably made from the same materials as their other balls.
Normally no big deal as their other balls are great UNTIL they die suddenly (and much too quickly) from soaking too much oil.... usually from less than one full season. I'll settle for a couple of 700 sets or an 11 bagger or two.
BUT I doubt it lasts that long based on my last 2 balls from Ebonite; the Big Time and One.

I just picked up this ball and resurfaced it with 4000 abralon and polished it. I drilled it with pattern #4 (extreme length with sharp backend). It gets pretty good length and the angle off the friction isn't as extreme as I expected. I get more angle with my Hammer Toxic. However, this ball gets massive pin reaction. High flush, pocket, or even light hits get good reaction from this ball. The Resurgence carries extremely well. Since I polished it, I can use it on heavy to even medium-light oil patterns. I would not recommend it on dry lanes, it's hard to control on dry (post-league) games. That's when I bring out the Hammer Vibe. Cheers.

For now I'm gonna say I like it. I found that when I polished it up it worked best. I'm a scratch bowler and I will use it in league this year. I love the way it drives through the backend.

About the Bowler
Bowling Hand    Right Handed
League Average    180

Just got this ball, and so far I have to say I'm very impressed. I'm a collegiate bowler and carry about a 190-200 average in regular leagues, and this ball has gotten me over 700 three weeks in a row so far. While I'm not quite seeing the hook monster some people are making this ball out to be, it does get a nice strong reaction on even some of the heavier shots I've faced. What impressed me is the smoothness of the reaction, this ball gets a beautiful arcing motion and still hits like a truck. The shot is nice and predictable once you know how it rolls, and should be easy for most bowlers to adjust with. Overall, one of the best balls I've bought in years. Good job, Columbia.
