The Ford Pinto of the bowling glove world...
I like to think that I judge many things fairly. So, I hope my opening analogy did not paint me in any other light. Perhaps we should take a look at why I came to the conclusion that the "Robby's Revs 2" is for all intensive purposes a lemon.
Now to be fair what's really so bad about lemons? To make further use of my opening analogy, the Ford Pinto was not that bad. They looked shiny at the dealership, they where not that uncomfortable, they got you where you wanted to go... but they where kinda shoddy, dented easy, and over time tended to smell funny.
That pretty much sums up the Revs 2. In the store it looks good, it feels okay, and it dose it's job. What made me start to rethink my purchase was the cheap feel of the aluminum, the eventual breakage... and,oh yeah, with it being hard to wash it smells really really bad.
To go further into the pros of the pros of this glove I will point out that it dose what it describes to do. The easy flip of the wrist position lever made it fairly easy to change wrist configurations. I didn't have to fiddle with it much to change from straight relaxed position, to a fully loaded wrist position. The angle adjustment itself was not too bad. Though it did what I wanted it to, I did notice that with the plastic washers it tended to drift in setting even whit the lever fully tightened. Overall comfort was not too bad. I will mention that anytime you put something on your hand it does have a tendency to feel alien until you adjust.
Now for the not so good things.
The glove feels cheap. It's foam rubber padding, thin cloth straps, thin aluminum, and plastic washers make it feel more like a toy, rather than something you plan to support up to 16 pounds (not counting additional forces) with. Over time these flaws become more evident. The aluminum teeth on the wrist position lever went first. When they wore in over time the glove started to have much more play than before.
This became rather annoying, and made for inconsistency in the feel of the glove. I eventually picked a position, and seized the lever in place with some epoxy. the play went away, but so did my ability to adjust. Next was the plastic washers on the angle adjustment. they wore out, and just like the other adjustment I picked what worked best overall, then set it in place forever. The aluminum tends to bend if say a bowling bag is improperly packed, and the ball rest on the wrist guard. I had a single ball bag that would shift in the car trunk, and upon unpacking I would find it warped. One last problem was the in ability to wash the material it was made out of for padding. I had tried everything I could find to clean it.. yet the very next series I used it It tended to smell just as bad as before. I then replaced the padding with some silicone I whipped up for a custom replacement pad.
Now all that being said, I still use the glove. so, it's not all bad. But just like the ford Pinto, even with all it's issues, you still see a couple kicking around every now and again.
