Evolve your game with Roto-Grip's newest addition to their high performance line, The Cell.
Pin to PAP(5 1/8" over 1/8" up) - 4 1/2"
Mass Bias Position - 4" from PAP
CG Placement - 1" right and 1" down of grip center
Balance Hole - none
Surface Preparation - Box Finish (2000 grit abralon)
What I Was Looking For In This Ball Layout:
I can't even remember the last Roto-Grip ball I have reviewed. So in this ball we really wanted to get a feel for their ball reaction signature and see what the Cell could do if we went with a fairly aggressive layout. This also seemed like a great time to do something like this because we have been seeing a higher volume of oil then usual and this ball and layout should do the trick for that condition.
What I Ended Up With in the Ball and Layout:
WOW! This thing means business, obviously with the cover preparation and knowing this is a high performance ball we expected to see a lot of reaction but this blew my mind. I made the lanes look like they were flying while other people were having issues wrinkling the ball. The reaction in the front part of the lane was very deceiving because the ball seemed to roll strong but it did not look like it was creating much friction. As the ball got into the middle part of the lane you could see it really start rolling and making a solid move as it got closer to the break point. For a ball with 2000 grit finish the amount of back end reaction was amazing. It was like it lost no energy at all through the heads and mid-lane. First game started out great with the front 8 followed by a mind blowing 9 pin and 3 more strikes. This was right out of the box with very little practice time.
To my surprise I did not change balls all night and my moves were very minimal. Normally with such a strong ball I would expect for it to be in my bag by the second game and by then I would moved arrows left. This ball really reads the front part of the lane well and stays very clean for one of the best ball motions I have seen lately on the backend.
We are going to go out on a limb here, with the e-tailing marketing tactics that we have in place along with the great reaction of this ball, not to mention the Ebonite price increase, bowlingball.com will call this as one of the top three balls of early 2008. It is very easy to recommend a ball that is truly outstanding.
Look for more Roto-Grip reviews as I may be throwing their stuff for a while.

Evolve your game with Roto-Grip's newest addition to their high performance line, The Cell.

What I Was Looking For In This Ball Layout:
This is the first Roto-Grip ball I have reviewed. We have received a lot of questions regarding the Cell Pro CG's and how to go about laying them out. Most of the concern has been expressed about the CG being too far out of line with the pin and mass bias, thus raising the question that these balls are defects or if they will react the same. We decided to drill a Cell Pro CG where the CG was roughly 5" to the left of the line from the pin to mass bias to see if this had any effect on ball performance.
What I Ended Up With in the Ball and Layout:
Simply unbelievable. The first shot I threw with this ball rolled fantastic off my hand and hit the pins harder than anything I had in my bag. This ball read the mid lane very aggressively and created a strong roll to the pocket. Once this ball makes its move left in the backend, the pins don't stand a chance. The only pin that really gave me any trouble was the 9 pin, and I'm never going to complain about a ball hitting too hard. I had fun throwing this ball for the first time in league watching the way it reacted compared with everyone else's equipment. It literally made everyone else's equipment appear to go straight. With the coverstock left at box finish, I found that it read the heads and mids very nicely. You can tell that it uses energy through these parts of the lane, but still reserves enough to unleash a ton at the breakpoint and send pins flying. This is due to the design of the weight block. Roto-Grip did a great job in designing this ball.
I got to throw this ball for a game and a half through league. After that, the lanes were simply hooking way too much. My teammate has a Cell with the surface at 2000 grit abralon and polished with Moon Shine. This ball cleared the heads much better and allowed him to throw it in the later parts of the night.
My overall opinion of this ball is a very enthusiastic 5 out of 5. If I could go higher, I would. This ball makes me excited to bowl. Definitely one of the best balls of 2008, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was still one of the best in '09.
If you are considering a Cell Pro CG, you do not have anything to worry about. After throwing this ball with the layout we tried here, there is nothing second or defective about this ball. The only comments you are going to get from people are,"How are you getting your ball to hook that much?"

Roto Grip hit a home run with this ball. This ball seems to work on just about every condition that I have seen it thrown on. Even with the dull out of box finish this ball stores energy for its down lane reaction. My customers are extremely happy with this ball and its remarkable carry.

I drilled my second Cell pin 4" from PAP (Positive Axis Point) low with the CG (Center of Gravity) kicked out and a weight hole and my mass bias 4" from my PAP.
Tonight I bowled on the PBA Shark 44' and a oilier version at that. By the end of the second game of our four game set my teammate and I were ten boards deeper than our opponents and still moving in while our opponents couldn't get their balls to turn the corner.
I cannot say enough about the continuation off of the break point that the Cell has. It doesn't just make a strong move like an Odyssey it has continuation through the back of the pin deck. This ball gives the player a look that I have not seen in a long time. I thought that the new oils might have erased this type of back end movement for all except the high rev players but the Cell puts the movement back into the hand of strokers and tweeners.
You would be a fool not to try a Cell.
WAIT! Did I mention the price of the ball is affordable!

I have thrown this ball as a Pro CG, Pro Pin, and a regular. I love trying all the different layouts. Check them out they are on this website. It is unusal to see the cgs and pins come out so early but that is sure OK with me. They even save you a few bucks, don't know why, I have seen guys on the PBA Tour pay a premium. I bowl quite a few regionals and with the new policies at Ebonite it makes it hard to get comp products to throw, even when your on staff. I don't know who is really in charge at Ebonite but my pro shop suddenly stopped carrying Ebonite products. Anyway I got a Roto Grip Cell, WOW, what a ball. It does very well on fresh oil and still performs well when the lanes burn out. I would highly recommend this ball to any bowler looking to improve.
It will be interesting to see the impact of bowlingball.com on this ball. I have seen blogs literally everywhere about this ball and bowlingball.com is at the core, I guess we will wait and see what impact the Internet truly has. The reason being, Roto could be a tough ball to promote because it has zero shelf space out there, of course so did the Black Widow, we remember that one right. One think does go without saying, bowlingball.com has never promoted a ball that is not completely versatile and that has a great reaction. I believe Ebonite likes to use the terms signature, maybe they have some musicians there, I would like to coin the phrase "condition receptivity". Wow sounds smart for goes long and hooks hard. THIS BALL IS A WINNER.

Aggressive heavy oil layout "4C" on the Roto asymmetrical drilling chart.
I recently purchased the Resurgence and the Attitude Shift, and the Roto-Grip Cell outperforms both of them by leaps and bounds, no matter where the ball is at makes a huge move that trucks through the pins.
If Roto Grip can make a pearl version of the cell, I am for sure going to quit using other products, besides Roto Grip. It has got to be the biggest hooking monster since the black widow. This Cell opens the lanes up on fresh oil...I haven't shot big with it yet, but it is just one of those balls that you know has way more potential than the rest in your bag. I average, 210+, and I've been in a slump lately and this ball got me a 279, its not much but it just makes everything sweeter the way it reacts. Buy one.
I seriously want to get a second, drill it up to go long, and polish it up...that way I only need the Cell. It's a Baaaaaad ball, totally recommend it!
I didn't have an account on here (besides for buying balls) and I had to make one so I could review this baby. I'm thinking with time, the Cell will be King of them all.

The Cell from Roto may not be a cool or catchy name but the ball is awesome. It out carries and out hits my Widow balls by quite a bit. It really showed up my Black Widow Bite, the Cell outperforms every ball at this price point I have seen. BTW, the new Bite really stinks, mine already cracked and my pro shop won't warranty it and Hammer (Ebonite) has not returned my emails. Go Roto and thanks for the wonderful service bowlingball.com.

The Cell is the ball of the year, this is what the industry needed to see a turn around in the industry. Ebonite has been doing a lot of damage to my pro shop business. Last year Ebonite and their brands had 70 to 80 percentage of my shelf space and ROTO GRIP "0". Now between Roto and Storm it is about 40% and Ebonite is down to 20%. Thanks for getting us on board bowlingball.com, especially thanks to Keith Spear the CEO who contacted us directly at our pro shop and thanks to all the bowlingball.com bloggers keeping the information coming quick. This ball has helped a lot of customers and has given my business a shot in the arm.
